Streams, bridges, paths, ponds, a marsh boardwalk, working relic mill wheel, swimming beach, finished roads and several parking areas along the access roads. Throw in multiple restrooms, picnic areas, office buildings and a memorial statue and, believe it or not, you have a winning combo. Bring your kids and dog too for added fun - and you're pretty near guaranteed to make some memories.
I can't claim to have visited most of Connecticut's state parks, but this one is clearly near the top of the list. On my first visit it struck me as one of safest and best maintained I've experienced in this state. Although there are always ways of being silly enough to hurt ourselves, it seemed that some obvious things were in place to help reduce kids chances of hurting themselves - e.g. the grounds were very clean of stones and branches and the bridges I encountered seemed to have solid railing/ sides. From what I saw the main streams were not that deep either, making them relatively accessible. (Regardless of all these things, parental oversight is always the best way to prevent needless injury.)
The interesting thing that struck me after my visit: no (vivid) imagination required. Yes, you read that right. It's not an enchanting wonderland. But if you enjoy walking in streams, hanging out at a lake beach or exploring paths in the woods with your whole family you should consider this location. My reasoning is as follows: there are a fair number of picturesque spots around this park. You will need to look a bit to find them. They are not perfect, but there is clearly charm.
You see, as a photographer, I aim to see potential with scenery, and there were a number of scenes/ areas that had my attention rather quickly. And even though I never got all the 'ideal' shots I was looking for (mainly due to time) there is little doubt I will return here to rework or try other things I spotted. In my book this park is listed alongside the likes of Silver Sands and...
Read moreAmazing park! Huge! Definitely need either whole day with a lot of energy or multiple days to go through all the hiking trails that they have. Lots of picnic tables and little grills around for every one. The beach/lake is cute and they do have dressing rooms. (Unknown if they are open for use due to Covid) there are porta potties available as well. There is a lot of parking it looking a like in the park and it goes way down! There is parking fee for out of state cars. There’s another lake with a windmill and a red covered bridge. And this looked like it was a very beautiful boardwalk but it was closed when i went. Hopefully they will open it up soon! Biking is allowed on some trails. Ps. Make sure you take a picture of the trails before you go hiking!! Unless you are feeling adventurous! Very clean also so let’s keep...
Read moreBeautiful ! The day we hiked the weather could not have been more perfect. The park was very clean and very well maintained. The trail we hiked was the red trail and it was perfect for my husband, our 9 yr. old, and out 4 legged child ! Not too long and not too difficult , but still challenging and funny enough ! High enough to enjoy the beautiful spring scenery ! It Took us about an hour and 15 minutes to complete ! They have picnic tables scattered around and we had our lunch there. I noticed they have inground grills near the picnic areas as well. There are so many more areas of the park we did not get to visit . I believe there's also a beach further into the park . Parking was very easy . Getting in and out of the park was also very easy. I am totally looking forward to getting to explore more of the...
