Great hidden treasure in the coastal South of Texas, hidden behind a state park. This untraveled beach allows you drive in your 4x4 only a few feet from the ocean. The wildlife here is breathtaking, and totally worth the drive. You have to drive around 40-50 miles to get to big shell, and you can only go 10-15 miles an hour, so factor that into the drive. You definitely need a four-wheel drive! There is no cell service and no fueling options, so be prepared - but it's worth it!

Look at the tidal charts and time your driving for low tide so you can drive on compacted smooth beach. We went as a group with Ford F-350, Subaru Outback, Toyota Tacoma, and jeep gladiator. Nobody got stuck. Ideally, if you go during low tide, you could make it all the way down without 4wd. We found the biggest shells closer to mile markers 50-55.

If you have a high clearance vehicle, enjoy long drives on the beach (17-28 miles), and solitude, this is the beach for you. Be sure to bring everything you need, the blue trash can (and your vehicle) is the only reminder that humanity and civilization.

I just got back from PINS. Big Shell is my favorite beach. Been to almost all beaches in Fl and Some in Ga SC, AL and the pretty but freezing west coast rock beaches. In my opinion none are as cool as the PINS beaches esp Big /Little shell. it is a natural beach not picked over by tourists. It is totally natural although there is some sargasso grass and marine debris was up on occasion it is a nice clean, but natural place like it would have been 100 years ago. Great fishing most of the time if not too rough. Like all natural places PINS can be a brutal place if you don't...

Words can’t explain the beautiful scenery and the isolation that you get when you get this far if you don’t have a four-wheel-drive, don’t go if you don’t know how to drive don’t go if you’re not prepared don’t go if you don’t have enough stuff to survive at least one night don’t go if you can’t swim, don’t go you can still be the visitor center and malachite beach in several areas there at the national seashore without risking your life by going. Somethings somewhere that you don’t know what you’re doing when they post the warnings...
