This trail is made for endurance, so be prepared! Must haves: LOTS of hydration or at least a flask to refill. They have a water refill station at the top and bottom of the trail, so be sure to take advantage of this. It's free, or you can purchase 12oz water bottles for $3 each. They accept cash and credit/debit cards, but if your phone doesn't have internet service, your card will be declined like ours. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the views! SHADE! There is absolutely no shade from the last part of the trail (at the bottom) to any of the water front areas. Lots of rocks and boulders, so wear proper footware, and bring and umbrella. This will be 100xs helpful to limit direct exposure to the sun, especially during 95°+ weather. Use non toxic sunscreen, hats, long sleeves, a hand towel to soak in the water and wear around your neck for the hike up-this will keep you cool and give instant relief. PARKING can be difficult to find, but please be patient and pay attention! If you park alongside the roadway, please park completely off the road, so other vehicles can travel with ease. The roads are sketchy as hell, too, so drive safe!! RESTROOMS are available for use at the top (farthest end of the parking lot) and at the very bottom of the trail. DRIVE. Please drive safely and with caution. Follow the speed limits and pay attention! The roads are sketchy and can be dangerous if you're not paying attention. Last, but not least. The HIKE! This .9 mile hike is a steep, gradual de/incline with multiple switchbacks. It is made for endurance so be prepared! There is a traffic of people of all ages (infants to elderly seniors). However, it is easy to develop heat strokes, dehydration, and other complications if you don't prepare yourself. We witnessed several medical assessments on the way down, and even more on the way up with one patient needing to be lifted and carried back up the trail in a gurney. On this day, it was 97° weather.
This is definitely a place that will take your...
Read moreSwimming at Crater Lake was an amazing experience! The "beach" wasn't exactly inviting... But being that it is a VOLCANO I can let that slide. Hahaha! There were Many signs/warnings that the hike back to the top was "Strenuous". We saw lots of people huffing and puffing on their way back up.... BUT NOT US! We took it slow, stopped to enjoy the view at what seemed like every 20'... in the end, because we went slow and did not care one bit how long it took to get to the top, we did not strain hardly at all. If you stuck with me this far, I will confess, I am 300 lbs with a cranky knee. I was dressed to swim not to hike. I don't know why I thought the water would be closer than it was... the hike was 1.1 miles each way. And I was in flip flops!!! Hahaha SMH!! So, remember I said, we didn't care how long it took? Who the heck hikes in flip flops? Apparently, I do! It was a bad decision on my part but ultimately, didn't result in a failure. (No blisters or pain) Zero trouble with my flip flops. I may have forgot to mention my hiking poles! BOY! Do they help a bunch!!! I can use my arms to help share the load of lugging my chunky caboose up/down the hill. I'm super happy with my hiking poles. They really took the "Strenuous" out of the equation. I can use them to help absorb some speed while my 300lbs and gravity are dragging me down faster and faster. Its like having breaks in your car while going down hill. I'm totally serious. Now that my arms can "shoulder" some of the weight while hiking up/down, my knee is sooo much happier now! Hey, watch out. The rocks are large and kind of sharp, but the water is exactly as cold as you think it is!!! Lol don't kid yourself, that water was COLD! We visited August 8th 2022. Absolutely beautiful weather. Amazing ambient temperature but that water was COLLLLDa hahaha Once I was able to have the lake water support my weight (in my book that "qualifies" as swimming in "X" body of water) i decided to swim to the bouy. Its a lot closer than...
Read moreThis was the most insane and horrendous trail I have ever encountered in my 15 years. The trail tricks you into thinking it’s an easy trail that will lead you to the water in a matter of minutes DO NOT FALL FOR ITS TRICKS!! 5 minutes in you’ll start to think your halfway there but you have no idea what your in for. The walk down while not enjoyable, with dirt and dust getting in every opening and crevice of your body just happens to be absolutely nothing compared to the hell that is hiking back up. The beginning of the hike back up is steep and rocky but not the worst of it, the most horrific part of the beginning of the hike back up is knowing you have so much farther to go while already feeling like your lungs are about to give out. There was multiple times along this hike I genuinely considered just letting myself fall off the cliff. If I did happen to fall I would’ve had no energy to get back up and would’ve had to accept my fate. Towards the second half of the hike back up the trees at the top of the mountain will deceive you into thinking you’re almost there but I promise YOU. ARE. NOT!!! I think i’ve made it clear the wildlife is unforgiving and brutal but I haven’t even begun to mention the absolute idiots that swarm this national park, and apparently have never walked before, guess it was their first time taking steps and that’s cool and all but this was not the place to do it. After all of this all I wanted to do was go home but of course a tree had to fall in the middle of the road and keep up trapped for half an hour longer than needed. The tree was moved thanks to a man who just happened to have a chainsaw which is extremely concerning but I am very thankful for him. DO NOT GO HERE UNPREPARED!!!!...
