They had the parking area for the Mt. Tammany trail head blocked off as well as the access road to get to the visitor center. There were no signs directing you to additional parking. I would suggest taking exit 1 off of 80 and turning left onto River Road where there is plenty of parking. You can also access the visitor center, restrooms, and the Delaware River from River Road. There is no water available so I would suggest filling up before starting the hike. In addition, the trail is extremely crowded and much tougher than many anticipate. Rock scrambling routes can get pretty narrow and slower hikers can cause back ups or lines to form. There are many hikers who need multiple breaks before reaching the vista. Although this hike is doable for anyone, it may take a bit longer than anticipated, so plan accordingly. I would not recommend this hike for anyone who is trying to maintain proper social distancing or trying to avoid large crowds. There were at least 60-80 people just sitting closely to one another at the vista and we may have encountered another 60 people on our way up. Another thing to note is that the hike is much longer than you would think. When hiking up on the red dot trail, you reach a smaller vista pretty quick (around 0.5 miles/1 mile in) but the main vista feels much farther due to the elevation gain and rock scrambling. Going up the blue trail is much longer and harder due to the constant (but less steep) uphill and longer distance. Be prepared as this is not...
Read moreAs mentioned by others, arriving early is very important since parking situation is tough. I parked in the parking lot where Red trail starts where I had to wait 15 minutes before I got a spot. Also parking lot is quite small. I did Red trail to the top and blue coming down. I saw 5 to 6 feet long black snake crossing the red trail. I was one step away otherwise would have landed my foot on the snake. I saw lot of young kids going on trail so parents be on the lookout for snakes. I believe NJ states should invest in signs to warn people of danger of snakes and black bears. Hiking on this mountain is getting very crowded and noisy. When I reach on the top, view of Delaware river and Mt. Minsi was breathtaking and rewarding since red trail is steep and difficult. Red trail is not that easy so take frequent breaks and have plenty water with you. When I reached on the top and started blue trail coming down, I saw black bear 10 feet away from the blue trail. Good thing about blue trail is that you end up with beautiful fall in the creek where you can relax yourself before heading to blue trail parking lot. You will find portable restroom in blue trail parking lot not in red trail. Best thing about Mt. Tammany is that both parking lots are walking distance away so no matter you start with blue or red but you are getting out very close to your car. We started around 12:30 PM and came down around 6 PM. We took plenty breaks for photo opportunities and enjoyed every bit of...

Trail comprises of various parts with gravel, small to large size unstable rocks and large boulders. Slopes could be up to 45 degrees many areas. Apply mosquito repellent as large numbers of mosquitoes on higher levels during hot weather of July. Having a cap or hat will protect from mosquito getting stuck in your hair. Recommend beginning your hike on Red trail and return on the Blue trail. You will see a nice water stream along with water falls. Plan for at least 4 to 5 hours for your...
