This is the greatest little zoo I have ever been to. It was such a good time. Where to begin?
First of all; this zoo is very easy to get to. The parking situation is more than ample and free.
Admission is twelve dollars per adult. Children under 2 (I think it's two years old) are free. My party and I (four adults, two babies) were very happy with the pricing. I would suggest you not bring a stroller into the zoo, as the space can be tight at times.
The staff are incredibly friendly and polite. No exaggeration, every single person working here are some of the friendliest and helpful people ever.
What really blew my mind was the fact that you can feed almost all of the animals. The person working the register had asked if we wanted to buy some food for them. Having experienced opportunities to feed animals at other zoos, I at first, refused the offer, as other zoos tend to charge a premium to feed one specific animal with lines that never end. Not the case here. The first group of animals you can feed are the tortoises. A couple had started to feed them and it was amazing to watch just how gently they fed from their hands! Someone in my group went back to the register to purchase some food for the animals immediately after seeing this.
The animals all look very well cared for. In fact, most of the animals here have been rescued from a multitude of previous living conditions, including a monkey who was rescued from a scientific testing lab of some sort back in 1981(?). This really warms your heart knowing that the animals weren't captured for the mere purpose of being put on display, like other zoos do.
My son, in particular, loved the monkeys and the goats. The goats were super friendly. I loved the entire experience.
I would highly recommend coming here. It's prices right, easy to get to, and the experience from animal to the staff is outstanding. I will be...
Β Β Β Read moreSweet little zoo with some really interesting exhibits but not a whole lot. The staff members we met seemed knowledgeable and caring, but on the other hand some of the exhibits seemed a little small and sad (like the bear just sitting in a pretty plain cage waiting for snacks). Maybe if someone had been there to explain, it's possible there are solid reasons for the way it's set up and maybe it's in the best interest of the animals, but most of the trip was self-guided. we only met a staff member at the beginning. It probably would have also been more interesting and engaging if there was a little more guidance - my child spent a while petting the turtle with the staff member's encouragement but then we went through the rest of the zoo pretty quickly.
When it comes to feeding the animals, note that there are 3 kinds available at any given time and you don't choose. So if you see a feeding activity on the website or reviews, that doesn't mean you will get to do the same one. We got monkeys (super fun - throw and they catch), raccoons/bears (we couldn't find the raccoons at all! The bear waits at the bottom of a tube and you drop pellets into its mouth. Sad and boring) and lizard/toad (tip a worm into a tube and they pick it up from the other end. You need to not be squeamish about the worms, and it's pretty interesting to watch how they eat)
Anyway it's a cute little place and the biggest plus is the location - it's right next to a river boating place, and a few minutes away from some beautiful parks and hikes. So if you want to add an attraction to a chill day trip, this definitely...
Β Β Β Read moreNoticed this place while passing thru PA one day and have been back every chance I can get over the last few years!! It's an absolutely WONDERFUL establishment that treats both its patrons and animals with great care and respect! Being able to feed the animals is so much fun, and learning their individual back stories shows the added level of attention they get at a smaller establishment like this. I read a few of the reviews prior to writing this and am disgusted by some people's ignorance. Firstly the price... I think it's gone up to $12 now for admission??? Seriously?? That's less than it costs to eat at McDonald's, and your getting an entertaining afternoon. Yes food cups cost extra, but again just a few bucks and it's optional! I'm more then happy to help support a small mini zoo like this then a corporate monstrosity that's more interested in profit then animal welfare. Next is the animals themselves. Yes some are old, old age happens to us all! At least you know these animals are living out their years in a comfortable habitat with caretakers and routines they've known and grown accustomed to, rather then being shuffled off site or worse at some larger zoos. Lastly the hours. It's 2023 people, there's a website and a FB page. Heck your prolly holding a phone in your hand right now, I only make it to the state once or twice a year and I've never had any issue finding the times they're open, it's not rocket science. I truly do love this little zoo and I hope this clarifies on some issues others have posted. If you're on the fence just go, it's a great time for kids and...
