We hiked Honey Creek Loop trail at Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. It was absolutely amazing! We hiked about 6.8 miles, including the loop, the short spur trail up to Honey Creek Overlook (and back), and a little bit of off trail wandering (slightly lost). One hiker described this as the hike through the Garden of Eden, and I fully understand that. This was a strenuous hike, but every step was worth it! We lost count of the waterfalls, caves, rock houses, green pools of water, cascades, patches of soon to bloom wildflowers (dozens of Trillium), laurel, and rhododendron, and views of the river. There were countless river crossings, ladders, ropes, boulders, slots, downed trees (literally climbing across huge toppled trees), and complicated navigation at times (we are thankful for the hikers who spray brightly colored orange arrows along the way) and the never ceasing setting sun to make this a true adventure! It is considered the most difficult hike in the park. However, it is now at the top of my list of all-time favorites! Our bodies are reminded us that we are more 4-5 mile moderate hikers, but holy cow, it was worth every sore muscle. We live in the most beautiful place in the world. Get out...

I’m giving this a 4 ⭐️ because I shouldn’t have to start a trail counterclockwise in order to follow it!!! We made the mistake and didn’t start the trail counterclockwise and ended up turned around in several spots!!! AllTrails does just ok for the mapping of this trail so don’t trust it 100% of the time, and go with your gut!!
There are times when you must creek walk, or go through rock caves to follow the trail.
I cannot stress enough::::: The trail is not well marked if you hike it...
Read moreA popular trail, highly recommended. A variety of trail features you could experience in one trail. I took counterclockwise, about 5.7 miles, 2.5 hours. Met several hikers on the trail and surprised to see many backpackers camping there. Not sure if need a camping permit. Terrain is a bit challenging. Sometimes the trail is hard to follow. A pair of sturdy hiking shoes is a must. Muddy, Rocky, rooty. You need to wade across the creek sometimes. Your effort is well worthy. Impressive rock cliff, cave, waterfalls. Mountain laurel is in full bloom...
