Wonderful museum with friendly, personable docents. A nice array of regional artifacts and the best arrowhead collection I've ever seen. My second visit there and I'll continue to stop in whenever I'm in La Veta.

Must see! Crucial history of our country, especially the old West is really captured in the multiple buildings in this museum, housing the fort from 1862 and also relocated saloon, 1-room Ritter school house from 1876, and blacksmith'sshop (1855). Displays include logging, mining, milk production, farming and daily life This is a must see. This museum has a the best and most variety of artifacts and buildings from the old West, including a one room school house with desks and relief maps from the 1800's. The building was moved from down the street to the museum, so it felt very real! There was also a Saloon building, which also housed an old operator switchboard and old postal units, as well as period clothing, irons, washing machine and more. An doctor's office equipment was displayed in another room showing old wheelchairs, tables, and old tins and bottles of medicines and preparations and much more. Old farm equipment was, of course, on site, as well as an original (also relocated to the museum) blacksmith's shop. A working blacksmith's shop was there, too. Also, grinding equipment, including a 1 ton grinding stone from France, and mining artifacts. In the fort itself were displays of music instruments, furniture, toys, dishes, Col. Francisco's rooms and items. Also, there was an Indian room of arrowheads, pottery, tools, grinding stones...

The guy attempting to "show us around" had the worst breath (like black hairy tongue mixed with helicobacter pylori) and wouldn't let us just look at things at our own pace. "I need to show you around" Why? "So you know where to go. You can go back through when I'm done." Why would anyone need a guide? It's a handful of buildings with doors open. Go in what's open. Done. We quickly left after he walked away. Being shuffled through the entire exhibit in 4 minutes only to be told "ok now you can go through it" was ridiculous. We're grown adults; leave...

This museum has a small footprint but such a wealth of artifacts and information about the history of La Veta and the surrounding area. George, one of the guides there, was so kind and full of facts and stories. He really went above and beyond to enrich my visit. The next time I'm in La Veta, this will be on the top of my list of...
