PLEASE READ if visiting Rocktown: 1. You will be driving up a mountain to get here and there are vicious potholes. Make sure your vehicle can handle it. Low-suspension cars beware! 2. If you want an early start, at least wait until it is light out to drive up the mountain. Running a tire off the road could mean you're instantly stuck (or worse). It can get unbelievably foggy at the altitude you'll be driving into, and that combined with dark and unfamiliarity is a bit much. I am speaking from direct experience and it was a bit nerve-racking. 3. You are required to have a "Land Permit" to hike here (though many don't and nothing happens, but you've been warned). Now, I only found that out upon arriving at the path my first time and had no internet/signal to call the office and make a purchase. Really frustrating and inconvenient. Call ahead! 4. You will be amazed at this natural labrinth of boulders. It is grand and majestic, especially in the fall season. I took countless photos/videos, a few of which are shared here. 5. Notice I called it a labrinth. You CAN GET LOST. I know because I did ๐Ÿ˜‘, and I've been hiking Georgia all my life. I went through a cave, came out with a bad sense of direction and nothing looked familiar no matter where I looked. Don't get too caught up chasing photos and climbing things. Stay keenly aware of where you are and where you've been! Having GPS and dropping markers really helps, and don't go out if it's gonna be dark in the next few hours. 6. Watch your kids, teens, and overly rambunctious husbands that act like kids/teens! They will climb everything, and falling here is deadly. 7. Have your phone and make sure it is fully charged in case you have an emergency (and that's any hike you do ever). A tale of caution: Rocktown at first seems of manageble size, until you slowly discover that it's in fact huge. During our hike, a large group that was out there couldn't find 5 people. Five older teens all got lost from their group. I was repeatedly asked if I'd seen them as people started to panic, calling out loud into the forest, and no answer came back. As we left the mountain, ambulances, the sheriff, fire department and freaked out parents were all flying up the mountain past us. What happened with that mess or if anyone got seriously hurt, you'd have to ask the locals. Rocktown is a truly unique place and totally worth your time! Just be safe and use common sense. Google Maps is very helpful to track your path, but make sure you have good battery. And remember, don't climb anything if you don't have proper gear and where the outcome of you screwing up is more than you can handle.

Rocktown is very well appropriate for the name of this area bc huge boulders are in abundance seemingly without no end! Rock climbing enthusiast's heaven I would say due to car tags for Idaho, Alabama, Kentucky, NC & SC etc... Be sure and check out the over looks like I did on a beautiful clear March afternoon in the north Georgia mountains. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿค ๐Ÿ’ฏโค๏ธ

Nice trail, great rock formations. Didn't know we only made it halfway to the end of the trail. Will have to return to see what we missed. Access from the east is a twisty climb up asphalt road, from the west its beat up tarmac and gravel.

this is not the right location. dont go to this place expecting to climb. you will leave pissed off. also, do not search "lookout mountain", " pidgeon mountain" or any other variation of "rocktown". as a matter of fact, dont try to put the gps coordinates from georgia trails into google maps either. none of them are the right place.

instead, copy this into google maps and lower your blood pressure. this is the spot you want: "Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area, Chamberlain Road, LaFayette, GA"

youll know its right because "uncle jeds" is just...

Ironically more expensive than Stone Fort because you have to buy a Fishing Pass. (As for now the year pass costs around $15. So if you go more than once per year, the money you pay that one time is immediately evened out, as opposed to Stone Fort, which is currently $8ish per visit.) The road up is a little rough with a lot of potholes, but it is worth the trouble. Beautiful and WIDE selection of boulders. Be prepared to walk a lot between...
