Good spot for hanging out with family. The new fishing pier we visited was nice. The road to get there was just as packed as I remember. Traffic jams still happen, as always... It's a bit of a dance with oncoming traffic when there are cars parked on both sides of the road.

Got to teach my nephews about crabbing with a chicken neck on a string - just like I used to do when I was a kid. One thing I noticed, if you're not catching any crabs you might just be in the wrong spot. We were not catching much of anything near the piers. A quick drive up the road to scout showed that people are doing pretty well just a little ways away from the pier. I do remember having to fight off the alligators quite a bit more in the past. We didn't see any alligators where we were crabbing today.

This is definitely a spot I'd recommend to those who haven't done it before. We were there when they opened the gates and left before noon with over four...

Great place to relax and do some crabbing. Make sure you have your resident freshwater and saltwater license. For this refuge you will also need a WMA Refuge/conservafion permit. $20 for a year or $5 for 5 days (must be 5 consecutive days). You will also need to look up the official sunrise for this area and wait behind the sign (in line) for access. Portolet is available. Be prepared for full sun so bring something if you want to get out of the sun. Clean up your trash by disposing in available dumpster. Sometime gators will be encountered...

It was donated to the state with certain provisions as to its management as a wildlife sanctuary. It is a biodiverse habitat and is visited annually by many migratory birds. Much research is undertaken into marshland management and alligator ranching, and the income from the sale of alligators contributes to conservation of the marshland.
