There are nice, large grassy areas for kids to play, and an older player set. The showers and flush bathrooms are nice. The camp host is good about going around and checking on people while offering to sell them firewood ($7 a bundle or 3 for $20 as of June 2024). We found the loop to be walkable, and that there were enough water stations and put toilets adequately placed that you would not have to go far for either. The water taps provide water from the city, so the water does not have the well water taste I know some people cannot stand.
However, many of the camping sites leave a lot to be desired. Most of them are small, with only one spot a tent can really be placed. They are more gravel driveways with some packed dirt, and little, if any, grass.
We happened to be there on a rainy weekend, and we noticed that many of the sites had little to no grass. This meant that the sites were all mud pits, and everyone was set up in the mud if they didn't have a small camper or RV. Anyone in a tent was then essentially sitting in their own small pond. Many of the fire rings were completely under water, and several sites were completely underwater. Site 76 was horrible (where we were located).
I can imagine if the weather was nice the spots wouldn't be too bad, because most of the sites are nicely shaded by taller trees. However, on rainy trips it means your tent and equipment needs longer to dry, and you and your belongings will definitely be wet and muddy.
The sites are also really close together, with little to no vegetation between them. So, you see and hear everything your neighbors do. In the attached photo, our tent was in the only possible site to set up. The rest of the area was a thin strip for the table nestled along the back of the site, the fire ring which was placed so the tent had ro be set further back, and the majority of the area was the...
Read moreWent camping from out of state invited by my parents. This is a long one and maybe some things we could have been more educated on, but with no one available for assistance, how were we to know? We stayed on an electric campsite. When we got there, we had an issue with the electricity box. My dad went to tell someone at the office and they responded quickly and fixed the issue; thank goodness, because we stayed during the hottest time you could have with heat indexes of 104F. There was also air quality indexes of unhealthy this same week. It was a rough time to be out camping. Because we went on a day there seemed to be something going on in the main town, there was no one available at the main office other than that first day we were there (Sunday). So on Monday, we got scolded by the camp host for parking my vehicle on the grass because we didn't see stickers that apparently are on every post but was hidden on ours about parking. Later that day my dad got stung by a hornet or a wasp because he ended up trying to make more space from the overgrowth for my vehicle on their "necessary parking gravel" (which, when you're trying to have a huge camper and ford f150 for glamping, is damn near impossible with the spaces available there). He tried to tell management, but no one was there so he later got in trouble for telling someone he sprayed it himself after he got stung. The beach was tiny and hot and a long way from the campsite so be prepared to walk, bike, and/or drive a little if the people you are with have any disabilities like my family has - and even though there are a bunch of no dog allowed posts, people ignored and let their dogs on the beach and in the water anyway. Whatever i guess. ALSO KNOW THEY POST ABOUT TICKS BUT NOT ABOUT CHIGGERS. WE GOT A LOT OF CHIGGER BITES. MAKE SURE...
Read moreThe campground itself was clean and well maintained. The camp host was knowledgeable and did laps very frequently. Lots of stock of ice, firewood, whatever we needed. Very knowledgeable and nice staff for the campground as well when we checked in.
That said, this is a state park that must be meant to be a cheap alternative if you don't want to book a resort or hotel in town. The location while conveniently close to the city centre and tourism attractions, made you hear all the cars and hubbub in your site.
The beach was non-existent and small, having to cross a busy main road to place your things, since it was standing room only at the state park beach. The rest of the shore was taken up by party boats and pontoons with dozens of people and loud music. There are two other beach options if you drive into town, but it looked like you had to pay for admission since it was gated and controlled entry. Again, standing room only so we didn't try.
Most of our neighboring campsites did not follow guidelines regarding noise, number of cars, people, tents, etc. so we unfortunately dealt with a lot of children running through our campsite despite asking them to play in their own site, dogs barking for hours since their owners went into town and left them there, and too many cars parking on the narrow road making it difficult to pass.
TL;DR - if you want a cheap alternative to a resort while you party and bum around all weekend, this is a great option. If you want to genuinely camp, be outdoors, and enjoy some serenity in nature, I'd suggest a...
