This state park is actually quite beautiful. It has access to the bluest of lakes where you can launch watercraft and there’s a beautiful clean sandy beach. The parking for the trail head to go hiking is huge, paved and clean. Very attractive. Staff here are welcoming friendly and are very active. I stayed at the camp ground and they were almost always accessible if needed. The restrooms are clean and open, good clean showers. The camp sites are not very level and I wasn’t able to achieve level as I didn’t have the correct number of blocks. I had electric and water at my spot. The sites are cramped close together which is a bit inconvenient. I imagine during the summer months the heat can be unbearable and there isn’t the best shade coverage everywhere but the trees do help. Not all spots have this. Each spot does have a picnic table and fire pit. There’s tons of wildlife. I saw many quail, road runners and even got to see a bighorn sheep.
The things I didn’t like about this park: The people. Which aren’t under control of the state park or rangers by any means. It seems to be a very family oriented campground and it shows. I was here on the weekend so naturally it would’ve been at peak busy. People walk right through your camp ground all day long without any consideration. Children do it but so do adults. People check in at all hours. It could be late at night and big rigs are pulling in trying to level out and settle in. I know not everyone can arrive at reasonable hours but it was just… loud. Kids screaming and running around all the time. I can be understanding it’s a park and part of the experience- but the ranger when checking in reinforced the quiet hours being from 10 to 6. I don’t think rangers are around after their shop closes because no one was concerned that these rules were absolutely not adhered to. People partied and kids ran around screaming all over the campground well past 11 and nothing was done about it. I understand that’s not the parks fault but if you’re someone like me who is full time on the road- this may not be the best campground to get sleep or work done.
Overall it wasn’t horrible- just something to consider. It’s less about privacy here.
The surrounding area is beautiful and I was happy to spend some time at the SARA trails as well so my time here was worth it despite these...
Read moreThis is a beautiful little park, all of the sites are kept well groomed, the bathrooms are nicer than your average park, and have free showers with nice wide benches to set your things. There is a boat launch, a swimming beach with kayak rentals on site, and a life vest borrowing station. There are some boat in only sites that are more widely scattered along the lake shore, we saw no one using them on the day we spent kayaking around the area, but they all seemed as well kept as the trailer spaces. There's also a small dog beach next to the Cattail Cove loop trailhead, this trail is a nice, moderate 3.4 mile path that runs along the lake, then into a narrow, steep walled canyon and over some hills with no shade, but some beautiful views, before ending in a dry (at the time of my visit) riverbed. Other features include a fish cleaning station, book exchange, cactus garden (most of the plants and trees in the park have identification placards, which I really appreciate), a small amphitheater and a shop where you can buy ice, firewood, and some small souvenirs. You may even spot Pedro, the resident Great Blue Heron, who was rescued from some fishing lines, and has since made it his home. The first time we visited this park, we were staying elsewhere, and wanted to look, but were denied permission, this cuts down on the amount of traffic in the park, which we appreciated while we stayed. We'll definitely return here, there are other beautiful hiking trails in the area, as well as the Bill Williams River nature refuge just a few miles down the road for more wildlife and fishing/kayaking...
Read moreWe absolutely love camping at CatTail Cove . We have been a few times and it has been great! But this last camping trip over this weekend we felt very unwelcomed by the woman up front, rangers and even RV campers. The families with tents were friendly, but everyone else gave us dirty looks all weekend long. We smiled and waved. We rented 2 side by side camp sites to make sure we weren't over the people capacity. We heard the park rangers talking about our campsites when exiting the bathroom and the woman up front in the office gave us a hard time about the vehicle registration. The older woman in the front office was rude when my fiance checked in. I was very friendly to her when I went in to buy ice and she thanked the people behind me for being soo friendly when I was gathering my ice. I usually do not get upset about things, but I felt as though we paid our dues and kept our site clean but we were still unwelcome. We love the place, but the service was terrible. We will look for somewhere else to camp for our yearly trip. Camping with 12 people is expensive, we spent alot of money renting a boat, a jetski, and always bring food for everyone and pay for the site. I wish the ranger up front understood that we spend alot of hard earned money to take this yearly trip before treating us like unwelcomed rodents in the...
