The hike through the forest was beautiful and not too challenging. I was quite disappointed, however, to get to very steep the entrance for the overlook ( which is apparently part of the beach?) and find a notice prohibiting dogs. I understand and respect the nesting Plovers. That is not my issue. I wish there had been mention at the trailhead ( on either of the two signs) that the overlook was considered part of the beach, and I could have taken him elsewhere. Leave your dog at home ( or bring a friend to hold him). Use insect repellent ( I use natural stuff, but I’ll go chemical in future!) They bit through long sleeves and long pants. Plan on it taking longer than you thought. Watch...
Read moreThe description of the Black Arrow trail made it sound like a nice spot for some Mountain Unicycling. I found the "steep inclines and sharp curves" described by the National Park Service to be underwhelming in terms of challenge, but nonetheless I really enjoyed my ride through the Old Indian Trail. It is very clearly marked at each junction and thoroughly maintained! What a treat to head off at Lake Michigan and appreciate the beautiful dunes. Big thanks to those who work to mark and maintain this trail system! It is a wonderful place to spend a little time in the woods and appreciate the lush forestry and expansive dunes that this area...

It is a nice forest, starting out mostly with evergreens and then becoming mixed with deciduous trees. You have to go up part of a dune for the overlook and there is still a bit of dune area at that point between you and the lake. It looked like there was also a trail thru the dunes, and you could potentially get closer to the water with some effort, but I didn't have enough time to check it out. As far as overlooks go, it was just ok. It's a little over a mile to get to the...
