We had nearly perfect weather for our 6-hour crystal digging trip to the Salt Plains - it was pretty windy, fairly overcast, and upper 70s at the warmest point of the day! Wear sunscreen, figure out a way to get comfortable sitting or kneeling on the salt-crusted soil while you carefully dig in the designated area. If the soil is moist, you can easily dig gently with a typical garden trowel, then feel through the dirt bare-handed - AGAIN, GENTLY! - for selenite crystals. It would have been impossible to keep a hat on or to have used a beach umbrella in the strong winds today - so have other ways to protect yourself from too much sun. Be sure to pay attention to the weather. We had a severe thunderstorm building by late afternoon, which hastened our departure. There is a public restroom at the entrance to the digging area access road - bring your own toilet paper or wipers, just in case the roll is empty (like it was today). We had a fantastic time, found a nice little amount of crystals, and look forward to our next visit in 2026! I don't recommend bringing a dog (which MUST be on a leash, and any "deposit" must be cleaned up by the dog owner!) - the salt will be brutal on their paws, it's likely going to be stupid hot, and the only shade would be what YOU provide. All in all, I absolutely recommend a visit to this...

The Selenite Crystal Digging area was a fun time! It's nice to be out in the wide open spaces. Make sure to pack water, snacks, and sun protection. I like to take a beach chair to sit it for breaks, towels, a second set of clothes just in case, wet wipes and a jug of water for rinsing hands and feet before getting in the car because I'm fancy like that. If you're a clean freak like me know that you will need to get a car wash soon after visiting and detail the inside of your car. Sand will get in there no matter how much you try. Also, if your a city person like me, know that you are going to be in the middle of nowhere so plan to use their bathroom on-site just inside the gate to the left or try to find a gas station in on the way. We saw and heard birds on the salt plains. The cows on the way invoked so cute and we heard them mooing. Like I said I'm a city girl and a vegan so I was excited to see them. There is a lookout at the entrance to the salt plains gate that you can go on to take pictures or just view the expansiveness of the salt plains. Expect to spend hours here as it...

I came here with my parents after searching for rockhounding places that were flat/handicap accessible since one of my parents uses a walker to get around. We went on opening day for digging (April 1st), and it was EXTREMELY windy, and nothing around to shield you from it. I almost lost my bucket of crystals more than once. Despite the wind, I was digging for about 5hrs. My parents called it quits early on to stay warm in the truck. We ended up going again a week later after I made sure to check the weather this time, it was so hot, a little bit of a breeze, and was a lot more enjoyable for my parents.

I plan on making a trip here whenever I'm visiting. I wasn't sure exactly how to prepare for digging and watched a couple of YouTube videos for what to expect. We brought a regular shovel and a camping one. I preferred the camping shovel because I was able to handle it the deeper I dug. We also brought a small water jug for rinsing off our hands and crystals, which worked out perfectly.

This was an amazing experience for me, and I can't wait to bring my boyfriend with...
