Whitetop, at ~5500 ft elevation, is the 2nd tallest peak in Virginia, and the highest one accessible by road. Unfortunately, it is a very narrow, unpaved, rough road. There are rocks, holes and washouts several places along the road, so slow speed and a high clearance vehicle are in order. The view from the top is pretty nice, although visibility was limited on the day we were there. Once by the towers you can hike down the mountain following the AT. You will end up at the edge of an amazing cliff with the most rewarding sunset views towards Damascus and NC. Note, even though this is a sorta maintained service road... it should only be driven in a high clearance 4wd vehicle with AT tires. Great cell service up there if there is an emergency.
