“Lincoln’s Head, My Heroic Pit Stop!”
So there I was, cruising down I-80, semi growling like a diesel dragon, when BAM — out of nowhere, I spot a giant Abraham Lincoln head judging my life choices from the mountaintop like a stone-carved sensei. Naturally, I had to stop. And let me tell you — this ain’t just a monument, it’s a mood.
First off, room for a hundred trucks. I parked my big rig like it was the VIP section of a trucker gala. The structure? Architecturally speaking — it’s giving “modern cliffside hideout meets national treasure.” There’s this cool part where you walk under a balcony-looking structure supported by pillars, and suddenly, you feel like Batman entering his mountain fortress — except instead of crime-fighting, you’re heading to clean bathrooms and picnic tables.
Speaking of which — oh man, the view! Sit down at one of the tables and you’re looking right at I-80. That freeway never looked so poetic. You, your sandwich, and the hum of America’s highway flowing like a country song in the distance. Honestly, if I wasn’t a solo road warrior, I’d say this is the spot to propose to your future trucker soulmate.
In short: clean, peaceful, scenic, and unexpectedly majestic. Lincoln would’ve been proud. 10/10 — would stop again just to stare into Honest Abe’s wise granite eyes and ask for strength to make it to...
Read moreFirst saw the Lincoln Memorial Monument at the age of 8 and have never lost my love of the monument or the site. Highway 80 is not quite the exciting route across much of America, and especially not as it enters Wyoming. But as you approach this site, the land begins to rise, rock formations begin to appear, pines and other mountainous growth begin to dot the landscape, and by the time you see the Lincoln Memorial you have already been climbing for some time.
What I love about this site is its sense of isolation, an inspiring sense of solitude, if you take the time to feel it. Walking to the upper parking areas (leftward if you're facing the entrance to the building) where picnic tables are sparsely settled, is an intriguing area of rock and tree and walking possibilities. Unfortunately, most of us just use the site for a brief rest, a trip to the bathroom facilities, or to gaze at the interesting offerings inside , but if you have the time, plan to spend a few hours there having a peaceful meal and walking about. It might prove to be one of the best "spontaneous" undertakings of...
Read moreWe stopped by the Lincoln Monument on our road trip through Wyoming, and I’m really glad we did. It’s not your typical tourist spot—just a massive bronze head of Abraham Lincoln staring out over the highway—but there’s something really cool and kind of surreal about it.
The statue itself is huge (like, really huge), and it’s set up at one of the highest points on I‑80. The view is wide open and beautiful, and the whole vibe is very “classic Americana roadside attraction.”
It’s right off the freeway, so super easy to access if you’re passing through. There’s a rest area with bathrooms and plenty of parking, so it makes for a perfect stop to stretch your legs, snap a few pics, and learn a tiny bit of history.
Would I go out of my way for it? Probably not. But if you’re driving between Cheyenne and Laramie, it’s totally worth the few minutes. It’s one of those unexpected little highlights that makes a long drive more...
