Fort Sill has two museums, the Artillery museum and the old fort museum. Both are good but the Artillery Museum is very fascinating and full of history. We came to attend our son's BCT graduation and this was one of the first places we visited and we are so glad that we did - our son's AIT will be Artillery and this museum has a wealth of artillery history from pre-revolutionary times to modern. I especially enjoyed the video showing us what our son will be doing in the Army Artillery. The old post museum requires some imagination because it’s still fully integrated into the base and officers still live in the old houses surrounding the parade field . Be sure to start in the main building and look at the diorama to get your bearings before you walk around. The best display is the old cavalry barracks which is set up exactly as it would have been around 1890-1900. Ft. Sill played an amazing part in our frontier history and this post does a good job of explaining it.

We actually came to Fort So for the Artillery Museum, and we didn't about an hour on the lawn examining all the outdoor displays, which were very well-kept with informative placards for each item. When we decided to go inside, we realized the sign on the door said "closed due to government shutdown." Wah-waa! But we really enjoyed the outside, anyway. Then we went into the quadrangle to see if that midterm was open. It was not, however, you can walk around the quadrangle accompanied by a free guided audio tour accessed by cell phone. We spent another hour doing that. We would love to have seen all the indoor exhibits. We'll come back!

This was a great little museum to learn about the history of Fort Sill. The man at the front desk was great and informed us on how everything worked and told us what was open. Even explained to my wife about the old horse corrals that looked original weren’t actually original and that the Army recently started using them again for the Calvary horses! I recommend this stop if you have access to the base and love learning about history even the Native American history of the area.

We were planning on visiting on Saturday because the site says opens until 5pm. When we were entering the security gate we were told that we need to get a pass at the visitor center which is about 5 min drive. There was no sign or any information about getting a pass if you are not in a military. It took us 20 min to get a pass because of the line and when we entered the base the google map took us to the administration office. We finally found the building and then realized it was closed due to labor holiday. It is a pity not able to see inside but we did enjoy the ride in the base and taking pictures outside...
