My wife and I, photographers on a journey around Lake Michigan, had the pleasure of visiting the Grand Traverse Lighthouse in September 2023. This historic lighthouse, located at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, is a true gem.
The lighthouse, which has been guiding ships in the Manitou Passage of Lake Michigan for over 150 years, offers a unique glimpse into maritime history. The Grand Traverse Lighthouse Foundation has done an exceptional job in restoring this site to its 1920s and 1930s glory, making it feel like stepping back in time.
We were impressed by the informative exhibits, meticulously crafted to resemble a lighthouse keeper's home from the 1920s and 30s. Climbing the spiral staircase to the tower was a highlight, providing a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Michigan and the surrounding area. The vantage point is perfect for photographers seeking stunning shots.
In addition to the lighthouse itself, we explored the Fog Signal Building, where we learned about the area's shipwrecks and even had the chance to operate a remote-operated vehicle (ROV). The Grand Traverse Lighthouse is not just a historic site but also a gateway to understanding the rich maritime history of this region.
Parking was easy to find in the park across from the entrance, even with our 36-foot RV. The friendly staff and the beautiful natural surroundings, including the nearby playground and hiking trails, added to our enjoyable experience.
Whether you're a history enthusiast, a photographer, or simply seeking a picturesque spot to visit, the Grand Traverse Lighthouse should be on your list. It's a captivating destination with a captivating history.
Admission fees are reasonable, and the memories you'll create here are priceless. Don't miss this hidden gem on your travels around Lake Michigan.

Read moreI have gone to this lighthouse in the past and loved it, but the star taken off is due to the Halloween event. It was still cheap at $5, but I assumed it would be more of a flat walk around the campground where kids could dress up and most likely get candy along the path in stations. Nope. I wore totally the wrong shoes because a lot of it is a walk over rocks in the almost dark. Over roots too. I still did it, but I thought I twisted my ankle. Special glasses are given to you that are supposedly 3D, but they just make bat or skull patterns in the lights. It’s cool, but still. For a “Haunted Lighthouse” event, the lighthouse didn’t have much decoration. Only one employee was dressed up. I was hoping maybe they would talk about ghost stories like about South Manitou Island, but no again. The boat building wasn’t decorated much either. It was a bit disappointing, but I liked being able to be in the lighthouse at sunset. I am not tying to knock on it too hard just point out they should list in their event entry that the walk will be over sharp rocks and roots in the darkness, just for liability’s sake, so someone doesn’t fall and try to sue them! There was also a “garage sale” sign in front of the gift shop but I saw nothing inside. One year, I got some cool used history books from local authors. I thought maybe there would be cider too or a fire pit. I feel these easy things would make this event so much better. Also, not a fan of their new large touchscreens. This is a pretty small lighthouse. But they were...
Read moreAbout an hours ride up the Leelanau Peninsula from Traverse City is Grand Traverse Lighthouse.
Built in 1858, this light and a newer automated light have kept the vessels of the great lakes safe.
It is nestled in the Leelanau State Park and will cost 10 dollars (for day pass) for non-resident visitors. The lighthouse itself is a short walk from the parking area and has great access if you require a wheelchair or other assistance. The light is open at 10am and stays open until 3, 4 or 5 depending on the time of the year. Check their website before your visit to ensure they are open.
We stopped by their gift shop before walking around the grounds. They had some great trinkets, shirts, sweatshirts and other light house memorabilia. The staff was friendly and helpful.
We did not go in the light that day due to the amount of other visitors looking around but did make down to the beach, the fog light and the automated light.
Overall it was a great trip. The lighthouse is kept up nicely, the grounds were landscaped and kept up as well. The beach is very rocky there but has amazing views.
If you like lighthouses like I do, highly recommend visiting this lighthouse if you are in...
