There are really two separate campgrounds here... the 60 site primitive section has much smaller campsites which are more closely spaced. The 32 site RV friendly section of the site has water/electric hookups and this is the section where each site has a large leveled area along with nicely spaced out campsites. While there IS a bathroom with AC sort of near the primitive section of the site you have to get in your car to drive to the other side of the campground for the showers. Its maybe a 3min drive or a 15min walk. One thing I found confusing is that both sections of the campground have their own number system so you could be at site "23" in the primitive campsite OR site "23" in the RV section with electric/water. Both site 23's have a view of the water which doesn't help differentiate things on a map. Most of the maps online show campsites going out along a peninsula this map is of the RV section of the campground BUT for some reason when we go to reserve America the map of the sites looks totally different... this is because we could only reserve the primitive sites online at Reserve America. That site also had a minimum stay length. When we called the site directly however we had no issues just booking over the phone, they took our deposit and sent us an email confirmation and when we arrived the site was reserved for us which was great!! We stayed at site 23 in the primitive campground and had a beautiful view of the water. Our 8 person tent did fit but we had to find just the right angle to make it work. I would not hesitate to stay at site 22 or 23 in the primitive campground as both are beautiful however site 24 is somewhat eroded & site 25 was badly eroded and the trees had been cut down so there was no shade. You would not be able to find a flat spot for anything more than a small 3 or 4 person tent at either of these sites. Site 26 looks out over the water and might have the most "area" to itself of the primitive lake view sites but it is also right next to the beach. Again not sure how big of a tent you'd get on this site. The primitive sites in the woods were all pretty close to one another and might be great for a larger group looking to all be close to one another. If we come back I'd look to either book site 22/23 in the primitive area with the lake view OR one of the much larger and more level sites in the RV friendly part of the campground. As other reviewers noted we found the bathrooms to be clean enough, and the staff was friendly. The directions to Mammoth cave were helpful as well and took us via back roads right to the visitor center. The kids loved taking the ferry across the river which was only a 5min wait and cut a good amount of time off the trip compared to the route google wanted to send us which was quite round about. We caught a lot of sun fish and a nice bass by the dock in the evenings and even hooked a large catfish which managed to escape as we were trying to land it. Overall it was a great time. Two photos attached... 1) campsite 23 (primitive side) and 2) a better sense of the layout of the campground on google maps. We wouldn't hesitate...
Read moreA KY native and we love to camp, so reading the reviews was a huge help to us. Like many have posted the campsite is beautiful, however there are other state parks in KY that do it better.
We tent camp, so let us start there. The sites are a nice size. Site 27 is over with the RV camping, 22-26 are lake front and off to themselves. The others are under the pines. Here was our concern, there isn't a bathhouse within walking distance. The restroom was still a good ways away from the sites, so this is a long walk for littles -- we just hopped in the car and for toddlers and emergencies happen. As for the bathhouse, it's over in the RV section. We all thought this was extremely odd, for none of the other campgrounds at the state parks are set up like this. I mean why put a bathhouse amid RV's for they do have a bathroom...IJS.
The beach was literally a stones throw from our spot, just wow. The beach is beautiful, however be aware that most people who visit don't follow the rules. There was dog poop all over the grassy area before you get to the beach, so wear shoes! Don't go it barefoot.
Highlight is that Jeannine's Boat rental is literally up the street and you're at the ramp. Also, the staff that works the grounds were amazingly sweet. The issues we had are above everyone's pay grade and just poor planning compared to other parks.
Need wood? Go down the road and across from the Brooks road entrance is a local selling wood for $3 a bundle. People here are sweet as can be. We love it and would come back, just not wild about the layout. If we come again I'd pick spot #27 or #22 and up in the...
Read moreArrived Tuesday afternoon and stayed until Saturday evening. The campground is small, but the sites are huge. Each site has a large gravel pad to park your trailer and then an extended gravel pad for the picnic table. The sites are amazing. I was on site 27 and required no side to side leveling. I had plenty of room to park my truck in front of our 43ft 5th wheel. They have a rule that absolutely nothing can be set up on the grass, and they are strict about it. No tents, canopies, boats, vehicles, nothing. Traffic throughout the park is very light which is nice for the little ones. Most of the sites have lake access, but it can be a little rocky. There is a nice sandy beach that they maintain very well. The beach can get crowded on the weekends though. I did not shower in the bath house but they appeared to be very clean and well kept. The camp store is not always staffed, and they offer very little in the way of supplies. The next closest store is a Dollar General Market fifteen minutes up the road. Cell service inside the park was fine, we have T-Mobile and at times would get 5G. The lake is very nice and clean but can get choppy with heavy boat traffic. They do have a decent playground for kids as well as some activities on the weekends. We did the water fall loop hike at the park and it was very nice. The biggest appeal for me was the small park size, large sites and pads, that required little to no leveling, and each site had 30/50amp and water. The dump station served its purpose and created no issues. I would definitely return. It was a 45 minute drive to Mammoth Cave National Park,...
