We visited on a Saturday in early April around noon. There is a pretty long gravel road to get to the parking lot but as we were entering there was a worker fixing all the pot holes just after a large rain storm the day before. It was still overcast.
There were a lot of people here when we arrived. Over a dozen cars, which we were not expecting. There were also nice picnic table area outside with trash cans on the hill in front of the building as well as a llama enclosure adjacent to the parking lot. A lot of people wanted to see the llamas.
The store front itself was very large. They had all the souvenir stuff that you would expect. There were a lot of snack foods as well. In the back left corner there is a small exhibit of cool dinosaur bones and other relics to look at which was pretty cool. We spent about 10-15 mins looking around. The bathrooms were to the back right of the store. It had a interesting toilet arrangement to saw the least.
The tour entrance is located right in the middle directly adjacent to the front counter. Before you enter they give you a quite talk about what to do and what not to do and then you're off on your self guided tour. It was nice to do a self guided cave tour as I don't think I've ever done one before. We had just recently been to Mammoth Cave NP in Kentucky as well as Shenandoah Caverns. There are quite a few steps and where the steps end there is a area with a low ceiling and wet rocks. So be careful. All the interesting formations were labels and had signage so you just need to stop and read which worked for us.
For what we paid for it was a decent experience. We were told it would take about 45 mins to see everything. The pace my youngest 7 year old walked at I think we completed everything in 15-20 mins. I don't think we missed much and of course the trails are set up so you can go back and loop around if you wanted to see something again. There were quite a number of people down there with us. Everyone was pleasant and let others pass etc. I think the coolest thing was seeing the original entrance. Apparently it was like 12 stories up but it was so dark and just a light at the end of the tunnel it was hard to tell.
Not sure we would visit again but definitely worth the first visit. We also purchased a Groupon online which was a great deal as well. We probably wouldn't have know about this place otherwise. Great place to stop to take a break if you're traveling on route...

A site to see! I cannot believe something so grand and beautiful is below your feet when you arrive. Super clean welcome center, helpful staff, the lady was so kind and the gentleman so knowledgeable and friendly! I would love to try the other caving experience there. It was so beautiful in the cave, well placed walkways, helpful information and just a place I will never forget and never want to leave.
Also, the gift shop is very affordable AND they have practically a full blown fossil museum there too! Compared to some other caves I have been to, the cave was not nearly as impressive as this one and I did NOT feel like I was being hustled like a sideshow carnival which is what some of these cave sites feel like.
Please if you are in the area keep this place running and alive by visiting and supporting them. I want to come back as soon as I can! Much love from Pittsburgh, seriously something I will never forget.
OH! And I they had some cute dogs roaming the grounds and gift shop. Can't go wrong with cute doggos! Can I go back...
Β Β Β Read moreThe owners are very accommodating with large tour groups. Very friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable. Even the staff is well informed, and if they don't know an answer to a question, they will find someone who does.
Great selection of minerals, other gifts, and toys for sale for both families and individuals passing through. They also have a cabinet of brochures for other activities in the area, which is really great for planning the rest of your vacation.
Formations are all very excellent and in a highly concentrated area. It inspires you to want to explore more caves and caverns to see what other kinds of beauty blossom below the Earth's surface.
Outdoor picnic area is plentiful and very scenic. The gravel road is a little disarming, but quaint. Makes you really feel like it's a Lost World you're stumbling into, but it can't be that secluded, because they've got a great music selection in the gift shop!
There's even a collection of fossils and casts of fossils for us science types who like to take a glance back in time when dinosaurs and trilobites lorded over our earthly domain. Great for children and adults. They even...
