This park is one of the most beautiful I've seen in NC. The lake is clean, the walking areas are clean. No trash laying around. The trees are well trimmed and evergreens. The walking/hiking trail is serene and cool. Nice bathrooms. Water fountains next to the playground. Covered shelters. A great place for family celebrations, reunions, graduations, birthday parties, etc. The playground has a lot of equipment for the kids and enough to keep them busy. However, it is out in the open with no shade whatsoever. There is a shaded area for parents to sit and watch their kids play, which is nice. But, no shade for the kids until it's nearly dark. This park would be an excellent location for a Thomasville or Davidson County swimming pool. Currently, there is only ONE city pool that is public for the people of Thomasville! The other pools are either attached to apartment complexes or membership is required. The members-only pool (except for the YMCA) had a year-long waiting list as of Summer 2018. Lake Thom-A-Lex has plenty of space to install a pool. It has plenty of parking that is rarely in use. The restrooms are already there. The playground is just a plus. If Thomasville would put a pool there, it would bring in some great money for our city, with a small cover charge to those who would frequent there. My family and friends, alone, would be there nearly every day in the Summer! We looked all of last year, and the year before, for pools to go to and take our kids. With a growing city like Thomasville, and the amount of open and empty space available at Lake Thom-A-Lex, there is no reason whatsoever that the citizens of Thomasville AND Lexington, should go without a public pool for our kids! My rating is 4 because of the hot open playground that could be balanced out with a cool, in-the-ground pool, since there is no swimming permitted...
Read moreAbsolutely used to love this place. I show up yesterday and two older men were sitting out front and one runs shop and other is wildlife. I was walking toward the dock and kayak landing area with my daughter 13 and niece 8 months. I was asked if I was gonna pick up my kayak. I didn’t bring one so that’s odd but ok. Then was out of the blue I was told no swimming. I had shoes on as well as my daughter. We frequent this lake and I am 100 percent positive they recognized me as we buy bait from them often. So I take my niece down to water and let her walk shoreline. God forbid one of her tiny feet touch the same water I wade out in to get in my kayak. I will never understand folks who don’t know the difference between rules and a 9 month old getting her feet wet. Anyways we head back to the jeep and half way I was stopped by the wildlife officer and told I needed to clean the babies feet. I didn’t go to park to get bothered or be told how to care for my niece. What a shame I have never had an issue before when kayak fishing or bank fishing. Shame my money will be spent elsewhere in the future. People do not go to the small lake to feel harassed. I get that rules are rules but this started with them assuming a kayak on the landing was mine and lead to the third degree about what I was doing. I’ll miss the place but will never return. Sad due to it being my sons favorite spot maybe he will...
Read moreThe parking area is too small. There are too many spaces meant for boats with trailers. The view of the lake is nIce. There are 4 covered picnic areas with grills that looked nice, reservations recommended. Saw 3 picnic tables close together near the main road. Would rather they be away from the road and under some trees. Saw 3 wooden docks to fish from. Tried several wooden benches that were very uncomfortable. More benches that are comfortable would be appreciated. There's a large playground. There's a new nature trail through the woods which is still very uneven and muddy so would be difficult with strollers and isn't wheelchair or walker friendly. Not recommended for anyone with balance issues. Couldn't find a description of the trail on the Web site so no idea how long the trail will be and what improvements will be made. Recommend gravel or bark mulch to help with mud, and have the trail be more level so it's...
