Lake St George state park is very accessible vis route 3 and is only half an hour from Augusta. It features campgrounds a roped off swimming beach, and a wooded picnic area. Swimming area is compact but there is no lifeguard on duty. Landscape is pretty and well maintained with pruned trees and mowed grass. Bathrooms are ample and clean. Like all state parks this year parking is tight so it is best to arrive early. Lawns are rolling with flat areas near the shore. There is handicapped parking and most of the park should be doable on crutches or a wheelchair with a planning of routes. There are some gullies but wide gravel paths and mowed open areas make moving around easier. This is a great place for a picnic or for children to play (there is even a playground with swings and slides). There are lots of grills and picnic tables and long lines of sight for monitoring kids at play. There is no wilderness or spectacular scenery here but this is a great place for a low key get together or family time. Use it for that and you can have a great summer day in Maine for less than the cost...
ย ย ย Read moreThough I am reluctant to share, because I like that this is a hidden gem, I will. This is a great park for a day of swimming, the lake is crystal clear and always cool. There is very easy handicap access, right next to the restrooms, with paved pathways leading to the common area. The swimming area is nice and rope/buoyed off. It has a sandy bottom, with some rocks. There is a playground next to the swimming area, nicely maintained, with all the kiddie favorites, swings, a slide and things to climb on. You can also grill, with charcoal (you must bring your own), on the grills provided with most of the tables. The grounds are well taken care of. Please bring back out what you've brought in to help keep it this way. There is plenty of green grass to play or lounge on. There are nice clean restroom facilities, with enough room to dry off and change out of your swimwear. There is a boat launch right up the road to put your boat in and you can also rent a canoe, kayak or paddle board at the entrance. There is also an attached...
ย ย ย Read moreThis rating is for a day visit. I cannot speak to the camping experience here.
The park itself is small but very well manicured. There is a large lawn set on a small hill which is great for picnics. There also are tables with charcoal grills all along the coast of the lake.
There is no beach, but relatively easy access to swim via 3 rough cut stone steps about 25 feet long.
There is a large stick built wall less pavilion building with picnic tables and cabinets. This also has a larger grill setup.
There is a good size playground, complete with swings.
You look across the lake to the far shore but there is enough open water for an excellent breeze.
There is a large outbuilding with restrooms. I cannot speak to the cleanliness as I did not use them. The rest of the park was well maintained so I would hope they are as well.
They do fence off a swimming area with a buoy line.
All in all, a very nice place to visit, you can hear the road but that does not take away from the beauty...
