Lovely wide open forest to hike through. This trail on the north side of the river and raven rock, and it is used by horses as well. There were some areas where it was muddy (depending on weather) and there was horse poop, but we found it was easy to go around since the forest was very open and the trails were wide. Over all loved the hilly aspect of this trail with a river in the middle of both trails and the little water falls you find along the hike. There are 2 trails. Both are loops. For those hiking in foot once you get to the river half way through the 4 miles trail you might have to turn around since there are no built bridges. Perfect for horses though. You may find a natural way to cross via rocks or fallen tree or maybe a sandy (depending on water level) area along the river. But you have to hike along the river and look for it. There are a shallow areas for those that dont mind taking off shoes and...
Read moreThis is a great place to get a hike in and avoid crowds. Bonus is if you're like us in the Dunn area of Fuquay/Harnett you don't have to drive all the way to Lillington to get there.
If you're walking, just know it is a horse trail so you'll be avoiding the horse poop... No big deal. For the city folk that are new to being in the country where people have horses, don't worry... It doesn't smell.
Both trails are 4 miles I believe. Take the West trail to see the waterfalls. It's the one on the right side of the car parking area. It's a loop but the fastest way to the creek is to stay to the left when you start the loop. There's a picnic table by the creek but you have to cross the water to get there. It's doable across some bigger rocks but safer if you just take your shoes off and cross at the trail. Pack a towel to dry your feet and you're all set. I take my 7 and 10 year old and they have no issues...
Read moreThis is mine and my man's favorite riding place. It's a little over an hour from where we live but so worth it. The beautiful trails are marked and have water, winding trails, and up and down hills. The parking lot is easily accessible and there is a restroom. I like that I can check the website in the morning to make sure the bridle trails are open before hitting the road. The only downside is we have to share the trails with what we call walkers, lol and dogs. Sometimes they are in the waterfall, splashing around and it takes away from the beauty of the experience. Wish they would go to the people's hiking trails. But other than that,...
