My son's 1st grade teacher asked me the favor of picking up 4 plastic 10" planting pots for a science project. I searched Meijer, Target, Lowes, and Home Depot but, they either had the pot with a plant already in it (which I didn't need) or only had more expensive pots for a home. So someone at Lowes suggested a nursery. I headed to this Hill Top Greenhouse on my way back from Dexter Cider Mill because, Google Maps said they were the closest and that they were open. When I pulled in I saw a large square wooden crate holding tons of the black plastic pots that I was looking for!!! As I exited the car, I glanced over and saw a sign saying they were closed. I felt like crying. But, there were cars there so I didn't give up all hope. I knocked on the green house door and then drove over to a mini building that I presumed was an office to knock on that door but, alas no one answered. I sadly returned to the car and searched for other greenhouses in the area but, each one I called also said they were closed. As I was frantically searching a truck parked next to me. I glanced over and was greeted with a friendly wave. I asked, trepidatiously, if they indeed worked there and they did. I explained to them that I just was hoping to purchase 4 plastic pots even though they were closed and to my surprise she insisted that I take them for free. It was so kind of her! With joy in my heart I drove back over, collected the 4 pots, and returned to my son's school, triumphantly My mission was a success, thanks to the kind workers at Hill Top...
Read moreHilltop is amazing! I've been gardening with them since they opened and have never been disappointed in the selection or the quality. Denise is so knowledgeable and helpful as is her team. It's a happy place to be and I was always welcomed in to browse and dream in the early months before planting season - so kind. I love that they grow their own plants onsite in excellent soil rather than truck them across the country (or internationally) like the big box stores. As a long-time perennial gardener, I appreciate that Denise only carries perennials that thrive in Michigan. So important for gardeners just starting out! Hilltop only uses biologics not chemicals which makes for healthier plants as well. I absolutely love Hilltop, Denise, her family and her team! Thank you for creating such an amazing, welcoming and joyful space...
Read moreExpensive plants that stagnate or wither away. I know this is a local business, but the mark-up is shocking. $20 each (!) for small hostas that barely grew; meanwhile, $10 to $12 hostas from another local nursery are thriving. Their hanging baskets had poor soil and quickly died, even with proper care. I'd be willing to pay more for superior plants, but I feel like I spent so much here with nothing to show for. Friendly people and lots to see, but that doesn't really help my garden grow. Bottom line: Make sure to compare what you're getting at this place with some other...
