We took a nice walk from the parking lot to the end of the spit on the Pacific Ocean side going south where we encountered a group of 25 sea lions-beauutiful day for Febuary. On our hike back, we decided to avoid the wind that had kicked up on the Ocean side and hiked back on the Nestucca bay side. We ventured into the dunes and eventually came upon horse trails in the wooded area. BE AWARE that the horse trails are poorly marked and difficult to navigate(marshland and densely wooded area, and unmarked forks in the trail) making it nearly impossible to cut across to either the coastal sand OR the bayside walk. Arriving early is necessary on weekends if you want a parking spot, but taking a walk south along the spit will get you away from the crowds pretty quickly. The rolling hill of grass is a nice place to explore as well. My only complaint is that this is a popular place for horse people to take beach rides, which means there's a fair amount of horse poop along the beach. I feel like, if I'm expected to pick up my dog's poop, why can't horse people pick up horse poop? Give them special diapers or something, I don't know. Keep it off the...
