We liked Shakamak! We were in the electric campground near lake Lenape in a pull through site, site 99. Our site was great! It's right across the way from a fishing pier, got morning sun, but was shaded in the afternoon.
Bathrooms at the camp site were very nice and clean, though you had to flush several times to get all the paper down. Showers could have been a little cleaner. There were noticeable mildew stains, but there was no smell. I even got hot water!
There were two fill stations and two dump stations right at the entry to the campground.
Bugs weren't horrible, but my husband, the tick magnet, had 2 or 3 ticks on him throughout the 5 days we camped.
Cell phone reception at the campground was limited to 1x, though my phone didn't work for calls. Texts would come through pretty well, but no data. Over by the playground there was a bit of 3G, which was nice for planning our day! There is good cell phone reception up by the camp store, and some areas of the park on the north side. But no 3G at the pool either.
There are several playgrounds in the campgrounds as well, and they were well maintained. Ours had 3 slides, 2 swings, and a tire swing. There are lots of other playgrounds in common areas in the park as well. Most have large climbing structures, slides, and swings.
They have a fantastic zero entry pool that is mostly shallow, but goes up to 4'9" and the depths are divided by ropes. Great for my 4 year old. My older boys liked the diving board and slide in the 12 foot side of the pool. They also have a really fun large slide. Adults can go, and take kids down with them, too. I went several times with my 4 year old and had a blast. They are open from 12-7pm and have very reasonably priced concessions. There is a shady grassy area with picnic tables, but there is no view of the pool, so not much good for mama bear. :) There are lounge chairs, but we got there the first day around 1:30pm and all the chairs were taken. The next day we arrived at noon and got one! $3 per person.
There are 6 trails from 1 a miler easy trail, to a 5 ish mile, harder one.
They have a great little camp store with everything from tiki torches to bubble gum and mac n' cheese to cake mix. There is also ice and firewood available at the campground control shack, and at the park gate. They take all credit cards, including Amex.
They have pedal boats that hold 4 max, and jon boats for rent as well. You can rent them from 7am - 8pm. Around $8 per hour, $20 for the whole day.
We also played mini golf! It was an easy little 9 hole course. Fun for the whole family. $2-3 per person.
We took a day trip to the Tulip Trestle, Yoho General Store, and Sculpture Trails which were all free to visit and well maintained. They have a diner in the general store and ice cream! Cute little place! The drive over to Tulip took less than an hour, and is very curvy and hilly, so not great for car sickness, but a fantastic motorcycle ride.
There is no cell phone reception in Tulip, so make sure you load your maps before taking off.
Overall, a great park. Excellent staff. Fun for the...
Β Β Β Read moreI have been coming to Shakamak State Park for 50 years! Beautiful park and campground is clean and I am my family have always felt safe here! I came here as a child with my mom and dad, brought my children here and now my grandchildren! I have NEVER had a complaint here, EVER, until now. I camped the weekend of May 30, 2025, We were to leave Sunday but we had such a great time we decided to stay one more night and leave Monday, June 2, 2025. I went to front gate to pay for one more nite, I checked website to see if available and it was. The long white haired woman at gate said "we have a bunch of people coming in, let me see...... nope you cant stay its booked for tonite." I mentioned I checked the website and it was available. She said sorry! So I pulled over at the Lenape ramp lot, And got online, which I should've done in the first place and I booked the spot for the night. I am so disgusted for the disrespect and the lie that was told for whatever reason. You would think that when a family has a good time and they actually wanna stay another night they would be excited to have people stay. I have never had this experience in the 50 years. I've been here and I'm so disappointed. Yes I could've just got on the website but I thought well. I'd run up front and just pay cash. I am so disgusted and I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else whose family just has a good time and wants to stay another...
Β Β Β Read moreI loved the pool, but I would not recommend the slide that shoots you down into the deep end of the pool. Unless you're a good swimmer you'll be fearing for your life. Or, maybe I'm just someone who doesn't know a thing or two about swimming and how floating in water works.
I was struggling and I'm sure the lifeguards were eyeing me real hard, seconds away from jumping in. Luckily, that didn't happen, I swam to the edge, got out, and I stayed above 5ft after that.
But the big slide? Went down that tons of times. It's smooth, unless you go too fast then you'll feel one small bump near the end, but most of the time you're fine. Won't leave you any cuts or bruises or anything.
I also like the dandelion shower lookin thing, it's cold but fun to sit in. The pool also got closed temporarily for like 15 minutes, no clue why, it was a "safety check" but they didn't seem to be doing much. Although, I don't know a thing or two about swimming pool safety guidelines either.
During the "safety check" I was hungry, and I got a hotdog. There was no ketchup though! I used their salsa packets instead and honestly it wasn't even that bad..
The overall park, I can't say much about because I only really went there for the pool. I will say though, it's pretty...
