Did you know that Big Thicket was our country’s first National Preserve? It’s a stunning area, that allows you to connect with nature in a way few other places can offer. Then, add in unbelievable photography opportunities, and it’s no surprise it’s a top tier bucket list location. My wife and I hiked the full loop yesterday for the first time and enjoyed it. It's a well marked trail in most areas with a few rises and drops in elevation, but not too strenuous. We got there at 9 am and were done at 11:30 am, stopping along the way to take pics. The tree canopy kept the trail somewhat cool, though the humidity was pretty high. It looked like we were the first to visit in a couple of days and there were a number of spiderwebs across the trail, so we grabbed a stick and held it in front of us as we walked, which really helped. As far as facilities, they're not bad and typical for national parks, but I've seen worse in other parks. Overall, a nice hike.

Walked this trail (despite the storm damage warning sign) & found this tree on a bridge blocking 🚫 the trail. Since in was on a wet creek, unless we wanted to go down the steep bank into the creek, there was no way around. This was the reason for the warning sign. There was no indication on the website or this page, so I figured I would update the reviews. Other than the massive tree, the trail was nice. There was a lot of evidence of hogs, but we didn't see any wildlife.

The trail is still damaged as of May 2025. Several bridge crossings are iffy, some downed trees, and sections of trail have been washed out. Noticable maintenance is occurring though.

That said if in the area and feel you can make the trek it's worth it - we saw dozens of bird species, innumerable fungi, deer, squirrels, and wild hog. The trails here have a mixture of bottom lands with oak, tupelo, and cypress sloughs by the creek to higher elevation pine stands. It's not as visited as the Turkey Creek Unit, so if you are wanting solitude in nature then you can find it here. We hiked for three hours and did not see anyone. (Rated four instead of five stars only due to the trail...

THE WOODLAND TRAILS

The good: Had a great time riding moutain bikes on these trails. The trails have benches with maps to tell you where you are on trails. The hills gave us some extra fun and excercise. There is a pond on the trail i wish we would have brought fishing rods...these trails are perfect for hikers.

The bad: These trails are not for beginner rider. There is mud and hog/pig rooting on the trails made for a rough ride. THERE ARE BIG WILD HOGS IN THE AREA SO BE AWARE OF YOUR SUROUNDINGS ! We are avid hog hunters and trapers so this was not a big deal breaker for us...

Bottom line is we will definitely be going back to visit the woodland trails...
