After a failed attempt at boondocking, and not wanting to turn around and go home, we decided to head to nearby Fish Lake on the off chance that someone had abandoned their campsite reservation. We looked at Bowery Creek, Mackinaw and Doctor's Creek campgrounds and not a single site was available. But then, the campground host at Doctor's Creek offered the overflow at Mallard Bay. It was absolutely perfect! The overflow area has no defined sites (no fire rings or picnic tables) but is right next to the water, making it a perfect place for campers with watercraft. Oh, and the views are amazing. This part of the lake is fairly shallow, so somewhat prohibitive for larger motorized watercraft but great for kayaking. The area was grassy, helping to make it one of the cleanest sites we've been at, not to mention great for our two Doodles. There is drinking water and an RV dump on site for a $10 fee - super convenient! That we ended up at this lovely spot was a totally happy accident. If you don't mind staying in a more 'primitive' spot, Mallard Bay has so...

We went to have a family picnic, but it turned out it was also the annual cockeye salmon run. Such a beautiful experience. I have never seen anything so beautiful like that before. I've lived in Utah my whole life and never knew that we had salmon that did that. The boardwalk they have made so you could look into the river to watch them was beautiful. I gave them only 3 stars, because they didn't have enough picnic tables and covered areas to get out of the sun and enjoy the time after watching the salmon run. We really had a great time, but more benches and covered areas would be better. Plus there was no toilet paper in the bathrooms. I know it was "after season" but the cockeye salmon run is a huge deal in that area so toilet paper should still...

Amazing scenery and fishing. Holiday weekends are extremely busy. Make a weekday trip with very little pressure and enjoy the local wildlife, such as deer, elk, moose, and many different fish species that can be caught. Easy catches of perch and rainbow trout near the shoreline at Twin Creek outlets. With a boat you can catch bigger rainbows, brown trout, Kokanee salmon, splake and the elusive lake trout. The 3 marinas have boat rentals and great information about how and where to fish on the lake. They also have cabins, campgrounds, and rooms for rent nearly all year long. There are Forest Service campgrounds that are on the west side of the lake located on the south side and in between...

The largest organism in the world is slowly being devoured by deer. A set of 47,000 genetically identical quake aspen stalks that have existed since the last ice age, Pando, USA, now faces climate change and deer that feed on the tree. Although it looks like a forest of individual trees with impressive white bark and tiny leaves that flutter in the slightest breeze, Pando (Latin for “I have spread myself”) is actually a collection of 47,000 genetically identical stems that emerge from a network of roots. interconnected. This single genetic individual weighs about 6 million tons. By mass, it is the largest single organism on Earth.
