We visited Lopez Island in the of September. It was also a base for exploring Orcas Island. Shark Reef Nature Trail was one of the first things we saw on Lopez Island and we absolutely fell in love with it. Starts as boardwalk, continues on a forest trail and eventually you are at this scenic point where you see San Juan Island's lighthouse, seals on a tiny islands and other stunning nature's scenery. We had to come back just before leaving the Islands and returning on a mainland. Unfortunately I has a small accident then when I fell and twisted my ankle. But that's no reason why we shouldn't come back...
   Read moreIf you would like a low traffic and highly scenic trail this is the one for you! There is a smallish parking lot with a small sign at the entrance.
The trail has a bit of a boardwalk and then can get a little muddy depending on the season, early spring is when I encountered this.
Once you get to the actual Coast the views are spectacular!
We saw sea lions just basking on the rocks about 50 ft from us. You can set up a hammock and just enjoy the sound of nature and the water.
Beware that they are strong currents. Also the end of the trail is private property do not go past...

Along the way you look down into the crystal clear PNW water and watch hypnotized as the waves gently break over million year old rocks.
