It was okay. It's pretty but not spectacular compared to many other places in the PNW. It's very remote feeling because of the ferry and how few amenities and services there are on Lopez and in the park. When we were there, it smelled like a sewage leak right by the playground/bathrooms. The camp host got a weird condescending attitude with us because we had not yet filled out a little form and put it on our car within the first 5 minutes (we had a reservation and there was almost no one else there because it was a rainy weekend). Also, the camp hosts had lavish setups (think most expensive 5th wheel you've ever seen) with electricity, but no other sites do, not even the handicapped site. There were 2 host sites which seemed unnecessary because there was hardly anyone there and I'm guessing not much for them to do (there aren't that many sites in the first place). It's a very long way down to the waterfront, something to be aware of if you get a campsite down there. The sites are pretty nice compared to some parks and there were trees/bushes and privacy. No showers, maybe because of the limited services on the island? No cell service on most of the island- I was very glad to leave and get back to civilization. The ferry ride back was gorgeous and I want to go back to the islands but maybe...
Read moreI give it five stars, but from a boater's perspective, it deserves less. I must say this place is very popular, but I simply cannot see why. #1 It is a spit, so it is out in the wind. We have been cruising the San Juans for decades, and it is always blowing here. The one good thing about the spit is that there is always a lee shore with a buoy where you can get away from the wind driven waves but not the wind itself. #2 It's a long walk to the park bathrooms, nuff said. #3 There is a swampy area on the spit, making transporting and pushing bikes a pain. The park is nice and fairly big for those coming by car, but for boaters, it is just a windy place to grab a buoy. I'll post a pic of my wife and son on a day when there was no wind. Read moreI brought iSUP board to Lopez Island. This Spenser Spit State Park was the 2nd place I paddled in this island on Labor Day weekend road trip from Oregon. South side from Spit had a rough waves on ocean due to high wind. I was planning to float my board there but decided to change my mind and launched from NorthWest side from Spit. It was much calm there. The island in front of Spit is, I heard, owned by someone. So it's private land and we are not supported to land there. So just in case, I stayed away from this island. I gave a ride to my friend on my iSUP board as mine is large which can hold up to 400 lbs weight. So my friend, me and my dog got on a board and paddled 1.5 hours or so. It was...
