The Alcove House is the ultimate finish line of the Bandelier trail system—and it absolutely delivers! This hidden gem is not for the faint of heart, but if you’re up for the challenge, the reward is unforgettable. To reach the ancient ceremonial cave, you’ll climb a series of tall wooden ladders and navigate narrow cliffside paths, which can be intimidating for some, but adds an incredible sense of adventure to the experience.

Once you reach the top, the views are incredible, and standing inside the Alcove House gives you a powerful connection to the people who once lived there. It’s quiet, elevated, and feels like a true glimpse into history. Just be sure to wear sturdy shoes and be physically prepared—the climb requires focus, especially for kids or those with a fear of heights.

If you’re willing to brave the climb, it’s 100% worth it. This was a highlight of our Bandelier visit and something we’ll talk about for...

Someone scratched “this sucks” into the didactic about the ancient dwelling cause this is more of natural feature than a cliff dwelling—there’s a covered rock kiva, really nothing to see but the view. If you like heights, the ladders are fun but if you have any hesitation about the climb up don’t do it, it’s not worth it. I often find it funny when people give low reviews of beautiful outdoor experiences, but honestly with the lack of safety features so high up and a very little reward this one...

Alcove House offers a thrilling adventure, especially if you've already done the Pueblo Loop Trail. While there's not much to see in terms of exhibits or displays, the real excitement comes from climbing the ladders to reach it. It's both exhilarating and a little bit scary, perfect for those looking for an adventurous challenge. Despite being scared of heights, I managed to do it and found it very rewarding. If you're up for an adventure and enjoy a bit of a climb, Alcove House is...

😱 Would you visit this incredible National Monument? Vote in the poll! 🏜️ Bandelier National Monument, located in northern New Mexico, is a blend of natural beauty and ancient history. This 33,000-acre preserve is known for its stunning mesas, sheer canyons, and vibrant wildlife. However, what truly sets Bandelier apart are the well-preserved remnants of Ancestral Puebloan settlements that date back over 11,000 years. Visitors can explore cliff dwellings, kivas, and petroglyphs, offering a glimpse into the lives of the area’s earliest inhabitants. The trail shown in the video is Pueblo Loop, plus the Alcove House trail. It should be noted that anyone attempting to climb the Alcove House ladders should be in good shape and not afraid of heights!
