In 1948-50 I was 3-5 yrs old living with my family in Albuquerque. With several other families, we would drive up to these springs, tent camp, and climb a NARROW trail cut out into the side of the mountain. A large log which was planed on top allowed the creek to be crossed and we had to be careful as often the log was slick and there was no handrail. There were 2 pools which we just referred to as Jemez Springs. The highest pool was the hottest (and most popular) with a tall rock face on the north side and large rocks around it. The pool was 2-3' deep and you could see bubbles from the springs coming up thru the water. It was nude bathing in the upper pool and there was a sign which indicated whether men or women were bathing at the time. If the "women" sign was facing the trail, the men sat on logs along the trail until it was their turn, and no one ever had to wait more than 15 minutes because the pool was so hot. Sometimes we would let the men go in, wait on the logs, then go back into the upper pool. The upper pool was so warm you could only stay in for about 9 minutes before feeling faint and moving down to the lower pool, which was much cooler. I seem to recall a 3rd pool, but maybe it was only where the little creek widened before narrowing as it flowed down the mountain. One of the men who camped with us had lost a leg in WWII and couldn't negotiate the trail by himself so my Father, who was 6'5", would carry him up and down that narrow trail to the springs on his back. I can remember how wet and slick the trail would be after a night's rain and always admired my Father's ability to help this man enjoy those pools. My Sister and I visited these pools 19 years ago, and I was amazed how wide the trail was and how the mountainside had eroded. I also can attest there is Poison Oak up there so be careful where you sit! These pools bring back wonderful...

If you plan to visit the Jemez Hot Springs, this is a must see and DO but you must plan and be prepared. NO RESTROOM! For some reason this part of New Mexico does not cater to people who need to use a restroom. Please make note this is a “over-the-river-and-through-the-woods” kind of hike. It is .6 of a mile hike to the hot springs but it feels more like 16 miles. When we visited the area it had rained the day before, rain in the lower elevations and SNOW in the higher elevations. Since it had rained the trail was muddy, slippery and messy. I recommend you wear old shoes, bathing suit under your clothes, and a strong bag to gather trash as you head out. The parking lot is small and people were waiting for someone to leave for a spot to open. The trail is treacherous but so worth the time. Once you cross the river, the trail is hard to follow. Watch for people leaving and ask which direction to head if you are uncertain. The springs: there is a cave from where the spring water is coming from, then there is the upper pool which has a small waterfall going into the lower pool. Of course, the closer you are to the cave the warmer the water so the lower pool is the coolest spot. Go into the cave. Don’t let your fears cause you to miss out on a once in a lifetime experience. It is so calm and has a spa like feel inside. The water is warm and the outside world is a million miles away. It’s almost like God created a tiny spot so you can completely unwind and renew. I only hope my journey at some point brings me back. Please don’t forget to pull the empty bag out as you head out and fill...

1992 my now husband and I came on a road trip. We stayed at the quaint inn and found the locals to lovely and friendly.. Wanting to see where we had been over 30 years ago we decided to stay at the Falls campground (as we are staying on the grounds of the BF) The one thing that caught my eye is how things haven’t changed.. Literally everything is pretty much stuck in time.. No up keep no trying to keep up with the area to maintain what little infrastructure is still standing.. Reading the posts about the sacred hot. Yes I say HOT springs because they were hot!!! So hot in fact you couldn’t stay in them very long because your body wouldn’t allow it. Or you quite possibly would have died.. The smaller spring was even hotter.. I remember our journey up the side of the Mountains.. There were many people there but everyone was respectful and kind.. No trash no commercial bridges.. Just a simple comradely area.. We aren’t going to make this trek on our visit as we want to keep our memories alive! Sadly it has ruined my thoughts of a next Adventure to come back.. Why? We went into the Pueblo nothing! No sign of life on the busiest weekend of the year I can only imagine.. I could be wrong. But what’s bigger than the Balloon Fiesta? I pray that it gets better. It’s...
