I learned a very important lesson from my niece's husband at Overlook today. There was a wonderful electric storm across the canyon and the rain was slowly moving closer. I lifted my left arm to point out the SF ski runs to my niece and she and I and everybody else standing at the overlook platform clearly heard a buzzing sound coming from my outstretched hand. I dropped my hand, confused. I lifted my arm again and pointed - same buzzing sound. My niece thought it was a June bug that had been flying around us earlier, but I turned to my niece's husband and told him what had just happened and he recognized that the air around us was electrically charged and had us all leave the platform and return...

This overlook is a GEM in White Rock! I cannot overstate how beautiful, serene, and full of wildlife this place is. No matter the season, it is an exceptional place for nature watching, meditating, or simply engaging in deep conversations with others.
The views of the Rio Grande, the numerous plateaus, and the Sangre de Cristo mountains are spectacular. There are many plants to observe, critters to watch, and birds of all types and sizes. Definitely bring a camera and binoculars. There is always something awe-inspiring to see!
