Brier Summit Open Space Preserve earns its name the honest way—stray off the trail and you’ll quickly understand why. But stay on the paved path (which winds steadily up to the summit) or veer onto the better-worn dirt trails, and you’ll be rewarded with some of the most spectacular panoramic views in the region. There are also some nice slanted vein patterns along the exposed edge of the Santa Monica mountains. It is very soft and brittle. It looks like several layers of ash from brush fire after brush fire over...
Read moreThe Briar Summit Trail is one of those secret gems that feels far removed from the LA hustle. The trail itself is moderate in difficulty, with great city views from the top. It’s shaded in some spots, making it perfect for a morning hike. I saw only a handful of hikers during my visit—definitely more peaceful than the popular trails like Runyon Canyon. Worth the drive for a quiet hike with an awesome view...
