I would let pics do the talking for now. Will write a review sometime later. :) Sometime later, i.e. now: One can take an Uber which drops right at the start of the trail. Then it is less than a mile of hiking to the caves. I went there in the morning around 6:30am in late December on a weekend. There were only few people who were to start hiking from that spot at that time. The way on the right goes towards the caves and the one on left goes towards the Hollywood sign. One has to return to same spot to continue towards the Hollywood sign. Well, I was the only one walking towards the caves. Being alone at a new place like this can remind one of various movie scenes :) one can feel scared too. The caves are dark, seem long, so good to carry a flashlight. I have read in some reviews to expect some bats inside the caves. Since I was visiting from Atlanta and had no idea when to visit the caves again, I chose to enter the caves and cross them fast :) and luckily didn't encounter any bats. I even tried to take some photos of inside the caves using the digicam on flash mode but they didn't turn out to be good. All in all an excellent experience, nice place to walk around, good to have a company and dress warm as it was very cold in the morning. Enjoy and live some...
Read moreIt's a short 5 minute hike to the caves from the parking lot. There is limited parking so take a spot when you see one but don't park where you might get blocked because people will do it! The caves were really nice but I was much more fascinated by the surrounding cliff sides. The caves are enclosed by rough, jagged cliffs that remind me of Mordor from LOTR. I haven't seen a comment about the hike above the cliff sides so here it is: as you almost arrive to the caves, there is a short trail to the left-hand side. Once up there, you have a clear view of the Hollywood sign and hills. The trail continues to the right and it literally takes you to the top of the cliff sides so it's very steep. The trail is 5 steps away from the edge so it is incredibly dangerous! You can take a route to the left that leads you away from cliff edge so it is not as dangerous and still leads you to the top. At the top, you have a clear view of the Hollywood sign, rolling hills, and even the Griffith Observatory. There are some trails up there that may even lead up to the Observatoy but I have no idea what they're called. Again, it's dangerous so vicariously enjoy the view through the photos :) I definitely recommend the...
Read moreFound this cave, unbelievable! So I packed a few rations, flashlight, basic survival goods and a fully charged phone and went spelunking! Not a tenderfoot, I was wise enough to bring some string to make sure I couldn't get lost. Tied the string to a rock outside and headed in for adventure.
After walking a short time into the cave opening I thought I saw what may have been remains of a previous explorers camp and realized I might be getting in a little over my head. When I turned around to follow my string back I realized it had come off the rock I tied it to and tangled on the spool so only about 6 feet of it was off the spool! Started to panic but remembered I had my cell phone. Unfortunately that's when I learned they don't work underground. (I think it should come with a disclaimer).
So I sat and thought about what I'm going to do now (wasn't crying, something was in my eye...) When I noticed I could see some light at the other end! Actually I could see light at both ends. Anyway, I managed to find my way out again. Next time I'll bring someone more experienced with me but all in all it ended a great 20 minute...
