We have been coming here for over 2 years for short hikes about 2 1/2 miles round trip. You can do the full hike which is about 5 miles but the trail is too steep for us to navigate beyond the 500 ft. elevation. What I can tell you about is the lower level around the park area. It is beautiful and peaceful with lots of shade and eucalyptus trees. If I were walking here alone I would feel very safe. There is a wonderful, shady 1 mile trail that surrounds the park. There is a bathroom facility, water fountains and picnic tables. This park is extremely well maintained. I think they have a full time maintenance crew. The park grass is kept green and mowed, trees trimmed and trails cleared of brush. The other trails that go up the mountain are also well maintained. They trim branches that obscure the path, trim away low lying brush that are over grown and fill in the trail with dirt when it becomes eroded from heavy rainfall. I’ve seen a couple snakes on the trails, not rattlesnakes although they are there, many white tailed bunny rabbits, a few woodpeckers, blue jays and other birds, and a couple deers. One thing I’m disappointed with, is the irresponsible and disrespectful dog owners who neglect to clean up after their dogs mess making it miserable and stinky for...
Read moreBig park, several trail options and plenty of shade as well. I'd give it 5 stars but they could clean it up a little better. Just a place here and there that was a touch trashy. I admit, I'm spoiled with how well the parks are maintained in Santa Clarita and the SCV area. It's a very high bar and this park doesn't meet that standard. That said, there are lots of options here, many, many picnic tables. No grills. No flames allowed at all in fact and I get that. Surrounding area is a tinder box, especially right now. It was 113 yesterday and will be well over 100 today. This is a park that will tolerate some of that oppressive heat with all the shade. I saw many rabbits and there was a coyote strolling through the parking lot as I was pulling in, attracted to the rabbits no doubt. If you live in and around Grenada Hills this is a good option for dogs, getting in steps, picnic (bring cooked food) and general parks and...
Read morePLEASE READ. Poison Oak warning.
Please do not take the unmarked trail into the canyon, adjacent to the trail to the Top of O’melveny.
On the way to Top of O’Melveny trail, from O’Melveny park, you will come across a fork. The left trail continues up the mountain to Top of O’Melveny while the right trail will lead into a grassy overgrown trail that looks like a legit trail but isn’t. This unmarked trail leads into the canyon and is LITTERED with Poison Oak.
I was exposed to a ton of Poison Oak here and have been dealing with horrible rashes all over.
So please stay off the un-marked trail that leads into the canyon. It doesn’t even go anywhere, it’s mostly animal trails in that canyon/creek and leads to a dead end anyways.
If I can just save one person from making the mistake I made, then my exposure will not have...
