Definitely don’t recommend this establishment. It was a busy and hot day. My party was 4 adults and a 5 month old. So naturally we wanted to sit inside or in decent shade. The lower level was fairly full and loud, so we decided to go upstairs and on the balcony where there was shade and a fan. We scoped out an area that was away from everyone else just in case my child got fussy. We asked the bartender if that was okay and to have the fan turned on, and she didn’t mention it was 18+. So we pay for food and drinks. Then we were told, by the the owner/manager, that the upstairs was only for 18+. So we’re not allowed upstairs. They offered to move chairs together downstairs, but it’s too loud on account of a bachelorette party and other patrons general conversation (Not my child who isn’t crying). We had to settle for outside. Time goes by and the same owner comes out to ask good we needed anything. I said, “No, we’re not buying anything else”. Owner responds, “I didn’t ask if you were buying anything else, just if you needed anything”. She then proceeds to say “how would feel if you were out on a date and there was a baby next to you crying?” I point out how the bachelorette party was louder than my child (My child who isn’t crying) So her argument is baseless. Owner was clearly annoyed that we didn’t like their establishment and was very rude and passive aggressive. Again, I’m treated differently because my child MIGHT cry.
But here’s the thing, my child was not crying, being loud, or disruptive. In fact, the only time my child got upset was when a bachelorette party came in the doors and were being very loud. So basically, I’m limited in the service I can receive because my child MIGHT cry (again, never cried once while we were there), yet a group of women can be extremely loud. And the area where we were going to sit was not occupied by anyone! Even other patrons noticed how loud the bachelorette party was being. And several patrons admired my child and didn’t seem bothered at all. Even new people walking in could hear how loud the bachelorette party was being. The presumptive daughter of the owner told my wife that the 18+ policy is for liability and to not have kids running around… my child can’t even walk yet. And again, has not cried once since being here.
Long story short, this establishment is not family friendly. They clearly want to cater to the higher paying customers. Extremely rude treatment. I think they’re trying to compete with Charlottesville area vineyards, but their overpriced drinks and food are lack luster. Not to mention the overpriced art. Like what are you, a vineyard or an art gallery? They said not to come back and don’t want our business. No problem. Sucks for you because I’m local and would have given you years of business. And I would have recommended friends and family, but not now.
You wanna act rude and passive aggressive towards us and treat my wife like crap, I’ll act rude towards you
Edit in response to owner: That’s funny, I could say the same about you. I post a review saying it’s not family friendly and then not too long later a review from one of your friends saying it’s great for families. Oddly suspicious. Whatever, I’m done with this. I’ll let the public decide for themselves if they want to go to your...
Read moreI am very disappointed in this place. It’s beautiful, the wine is decent, and the beer is very good. But it is not family friendly at all. So, I highly suggest you don’t bring children (and if Everleigh doesn’t want children around, they should make it a 21+ location, as I’ve seen a couple wineries do). I’m a single mom, so I bring my daughter (2 years old) everywhere — and to wineries and breweries all the time. She is always very welcome and is really quite well-behaved for a toddler (not rambunctious at all). We brought a few toys to keep her occupied, she enjoyed the live music, and she happened to find a random balloon at the winery. She was having fun with this balloon and my whole group was making sure she didn’t do anything crazy with it (watching all our glasses, trying to keep her nearby the group, etc… and she was just very gently bopping it around). She went outside and left it nearby, and we noticed that the owner (or manager?) not-so-discreetly took it and popped it while my daughter was outside. There are so many ways this could have been better handled, such as outright telling us that my daughter playing with a balloon (that she found there in the winery!) was bothering people, if that was the case. Anyway, after what had been a nice afternoon there, this left a bad taste in my mouth and I don’t plan on returning or recommending Everleigh to others, especially friends with kids. There are several other wineries and breweries in the area that welcome families.
Edited to add (in response to owner): Appreciate the response. My main point is that communication is how to best address such situations. We were never told we were bothering others, as we kept her play in the area of our group (she is not a wild child who was treating the place like an indoor playground). Anyway, the issue was that we just weren’t spoken to directly about the apparent problem — until WE finally inquired as we were leaving. Had we known she was being bothersome, I would have done something. For the future of your business, I suggest just speaking to your customers if they are doing something...
