When I heard that America's largest Maximum Security prison held a rodeo every year- I had to see it with my own eyes! I wasn't sure how I would feel, going to a prison and watching the inmates get thrown around and potentially trampled by the bulls. But, once I saw it for myself- it seemed to me that everyone there was having a blast. I'm sure that the inmates here don't have much to look forward to on a daily basis, and not much excitement- and this rodeo gives them something fun to do, and make some money while they're at it. Bull riders make up to $500 if they decide to sign up. Also, I want to say... OMG THE FURNITURE!! I saw some of the most amazing hand built, carved wood furniture and sculpture, and the prices are wayyy less than buying the same piece at a store. Helpful Tips for the Rodeo- You CAN bring in your cell phone Bring CASH- you'll need it. Cracklins are bomb Arrive a little late, and leave 30 mins early- you will beat all the traffic. (If you leave when it ends, it can take up to 2 hours to get out of the prison gates) Don't bring a purse. Only bring ID and money in...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of attending the Angola Prison Rodeo and Arts Festival, and it was an experience I'll never forget. Traveling from Houston, the drive to the rodeo was absolutely beautiful, with picturesque landscapes that set the perfect tone for the day.
Once we arrived, I was impressed by the atmosphere. The event was well-organized and provided a unique glimpse into the lives of the inmates who participate in the rodeo and showcase their artistic talents. It was heartening to see the positive changes and rehabilitation efforts taking place within the prison system.
The food was another highlight of our visit. It was not only delicious but also very affordable, which made the experience even more enjoyable. We tried a variety of dishes that truly captured the local flavors.
Overall, the Angola Prison Rodeo and Arts Festival is a remarkable event that combines entertainment, community spirit, and a chance to witness the transformative power of art and sport. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a...
Read morePlan to spend the day and bring a trailer if you're interested in the 100's of unique crafts these guys have been working on all year. We took a truck but definitely needed a trailer. We had to just stop looking at the wares offered because we had no more room for exporting the 7 hours back home! There's tons of food offerings in a huge food court with a live prison band. The rodeo was very entertaining and the music set the mood. The guys are tough, brave and have been working on this all year. Our 10 year old loved it and wants to go back next year! We went to our assigned seats about an hour before the rodeo was supposed to start. We were glad we did because the ceremonies started 30-40 minutes ahead of schedule. So just keep that in mind. Check the arena seating BEFORE ordering tickets so you're in the shade. If you can get ahold of a rodeo program book ahead of time, it would be very helpful to make your visit enjoyable. Our rodeo...
