Port Hudson was on my 'must-see' list because of its history. My husband and I went the last weekend of January 2023. The man working that day didn't give us any historical information about the battle or history that happened here. We brought our German Shepherd on the hike. She enjoyed the great outdoors. The trail wasn't well marked of knowing what happened where. The map we got at the information station, wasn't detailed. We walked/hiked a portion of it just talking and enjoying the outdoors. We brought lunch and ate at the day-use area. It was a beautiful day to get outside with our pup. Hopefully, some improvements can be made to 'bring out' this part of...

I’ve ridden past the sign for this place for decades without stopping. Today the wife and I stopped and visited the museum and battlefield. The place is neat and well taken care of. A small museum has exhibits that explain the siege and battles along with an overview of the Union’s strategy to defeat the Confederacy. Cannons, guns, and all manner of equipment was found, cleaned up, and put on display. Lots of picnic areas and a few towers one can climb to get more of a Birds Eye’s view of the area. The staff was nice and knowledgeable. Several walking trails that I am too old and fat to go down. All and all a nice side stop on the way down to...

I didn't really know what to expect before I visited, and I had actually heard that there wasn't much here from some other locals. Finally went while some family from Utah was in town. They have a nice little museum and some very well-maintained trails and walkways. There's not a lot left of the battlefield itself in terms of structures but the fact is the Civil War was often fought on ad-hoc battlefields hastily constructed with earthworks and unprocessed timber. It was amazing to think about what had taken place right on the spots where we stood and enjoyed the shade of the trees with the freedom that we all too often take...

We were really impressed with the museum. We watched the 15 minute video to get a real idea of the siege. I knew the River played a large part in the war, but didn't know the Union army came from both directions. Lots of weaponry and diaramas that show the placements since it's kinda hard to imagine walking around outside since the trees and brush have reclaimed the land. They won't let ya, but I'd love to bring my metal detector out there and look around. 2 thumbs up. Really liked the over 62 gets in free. Saw a couple of armadillos rooting around and my wife walked right up to one and touched it with her foot. Must be tame 🤣

I took a dozen Girl Scouts hiking at Port Hudson! They were more interested in the hiking than the museum, although the museum was interesting to the adults. The great thing about hiking at Port Hudson is that the terrain is very unlike most of the surrounding area. It has some pretty significant hills! The old earthwork forts are super cool also. We didn't see much useful signage however. There are some signs with alphabet labels, but the map I downloaded before the hike didn't include the letters. Thankfully we had a trails app.
