Avoid if there have been rains. In the dry one can do it in a normal car, but it would slow and rough. Ruts, rough, and rocky but I didn't see anything I couldn't do in a car if I slowed way down and choose one's path. No 4WD needed when dry, but a pickup or something with a good travel suspension makes it tolerable. It took me 70 minutes from the 310 to get there at a leisurely pace in my Tundra. As others mentioned it's about 10 minutes to observe. Normally I would not recommend spending hours of driving for something cool but so short, but the drive is beautiful. One should think of the whole drive as part of the experience. Amazing vistas. It's hard to see inside the cave, one needs a few minutes for ones eyes to adjust. A spotlight would be useful. Short walk from the parking area on a paved path with a few good stairs. I drove up further as a friend has seen wild horses up there on top, but I didn't see any. Consider making it a loop by continuing driving that way which will come...

I'm sorry but for all the negative reviews...."it's underwhelming, not much to do, too long of a drive for what little there is to do or the trial is too rough....." go to an art museum or something. If you can't appreciate the nature of the cave for what it's worth you don't appreciate nature itself and have no place in it. The trail whatever one you take rough or smooth is amazing, the views are spectacular and the wildlife great. If you are expecting a cave expedition don't wase your time. But if you can appreciate a good ride with a interesting geological feature....this is a great...

The beauty of this area was amazing. My grandchildren love it here. This is the first ice cave I have seen. Sadly we forgot flashlights, but our phone lights worked okay. The Stairway down was definitely well maintained. I heard there were more in the area so we will explore further. The main road that takes you to the campground where we stayed had one long section of road that was very rough and appeared to not be maintained. If you are camping, make sure that things are tucked away. Big thanks to the forest service for good...

Awesome day trip with family! Cave is a sight! The ride up is not what you might expect; very rough and rocky. Pick up with/w/o lift, no problem. The real fun is riding the ATV up to the parking area! My son had a blast!! 7250ft altitude, beautiful scenery! Will plan better for next trip, more ATVs and friends! Take the short way thru Bridger, the East route thru Pryor and the Reservation is long and really rough at times, Oh, no cell service BTW.

Walked up there alone about 1995, and thought about going again !! When I got there, I signed into a Forest Service log that was stored in a 4" PVC pipe in the cave. I was the last entry and used the margin !! Wanted to go again since, but I'm 30 years older. Remember crawling across a rock slide and noticing the difference in bees and flies at different elevations.

So the cave itself may be well worth it, we actually never got to the cave even after driving 2 hours. The drive to the cave is a nightmare. We kept thinking it was going to get better. Roads barely wide enough for one car. Mud ruts that can easily get one stuck. There should be a big warning with this post- for 4 by 4 or off road vehicles ONLY!
