A cool little excursion that led to an interesting shop. A friend responded to the question today - what should we do for fun, but haven't tried before? She immediately suggested visiting Kraussdale Alpacas.
For now, it runs on a limited schedule - Sat and Sun, 10 - 4 pm. However, next weekend, Maggie - the proprietor - has an interesting Open House event - check the website. The typical Saturday, like today, would have visitors see about a dozen animals - kinda' like a zoo. The visitor can stand and observe. These are mild animals - smaller than the cousin llama, and less territorial. We never saw them spit. It was a delightful experience to see them.
We went into the shop and met Maggie. She was gracious and answered the many questions of curious newby's. She clearly loves her animals, and has been raising them for about 17 years. The business is ancillary to the animals.
However, the shop is pretty cool. Right now I have put on my new, alpaca socks, and they are cozy and comfortable. The fibers are incredibly soft. She carries a range of hats, gloves, sweaters, socks, jackets, and throws. You also have to ask about the dryer balls - a nice, eco-friendly alternative to dryer sheets. Also, ask about the "before / after" picture of the alpaca when it received its 'hair cut'. They carry a sizable coat of fleece!
Cool to meet an entrepreneur who came at the business as an extension of a passion and interest. For us, it made for a great...

It was a great experience & very informative. Being able to pet the alpacas was the highlight! There were ladies on sight with spinning wheels producing yarn from alpaca fleece. And don't let the small store fool you....it had lots of complimentary treats & an expansive variety of...
