Gillette Castle State Park is one of the best destinations to visit in the state of Connecticut! It is an actual castle with spectacular views overlooking the Connecticut River. There are 24 rooms in the castle with 47 intricately carved doors. The castle was built by playwright, director, and actor William Gillette. To visit it is best to purchase a ticket online and reserve a tour time. The tours are given every 15 minutes. A tour guide will explain the history and construction of the castle at the entrance. After that you will go to the "living room" and another tour guide will explain it's significance and give a personal history of William Gillette. The tour guides did a really good job explaining the unique history of the place. After this part of the tour you are free to do a self guided tour of the rest of the castle. The second floor has bedrooms and guestrooms. There are some guides who can further explain each room on this level as well. The personal touch that Gillette put into the castle is really uniquely special. The doors in and around nearly every room cannot be seen anywhere else. Gillette's personal bedroom was also tailored just for him. The third floor has Gillette's library and art gallery. A guide can explain any questions you have here as well. A fire suppression system complete with a water tank can also be seen on this level of the castle. Finally, when you're on the way out be sure to catch the views of the Connecticut River from the porch. He picked this location for the castle specifically for the views and you can see why. Also, look at the masonry here. The visitor center is fairly nice and the movie about Gillette should be seen. The movie does a good job explaining who William Gillette was and why he built the castle. Famous visitors to the castle included Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, and President Calvin Coolidge. Part of Gillette's "mini train" is also in the visitor center. This little train brought people up to the house from the river. Not to be missed, are the costumes that Gillette invented and wore for his Sherlock Holmes movies. The hiking trails around the castle are also very nice. Be sure to check out the gift shop. Definitely, a unique house and park that...

The castle, built by actor William Gillette in the early 20th century, features unique stone architecture and whimsical interior design, making it a perfect subject for aerial photography.
Using the DJI Air 3, I captured stunning aerial footage of the castle. The DJI Air 3's obstacle sensing system ensured a smooth flight, even in the densely wooded areas around the castle.
For those planning to fly their drones at Gillett Castle, it’s important to note the signal conditions. The area has a relatively open sky, providing strong GPS signals, but the dense foliage in some parts can occasionally interfere with the connection. Always ensure your drone has a strong signal before capturing footage to avoid any disruptions.
However, be aware that flying drones from the castle grounds is not allowed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) unless you have special permission. To comply with regulations, I took off from my private property nearby, ensuring I stayed within legal boundaries while capturing these beautiful scenes.
As Gillett Castle is a popular tourist destination, it's crucial to be mindful of visitors and fly your drone responsibly. Weekdays or early mornings are the best times to capture footage with minimal interference.
