This is 1 of 2 beaches I frequent in Connecticut. I've been going here for over 50 years. I went as a child; I took my own children when they were young; and now I bring my grandson. Not much has changed structurally over the last half century. It's still a classic New England shoreline beach. The bottom of the water is full of rocks and sharp shells and the beach itself is full of shells, rocks, and pebbles. This is typical for any natural shoreline and should not be compared to a groomed soft sandy beach like those in Florida and elsewhere. My only concern is how lax they've become in enforcing the clearly posted regulations. The speed limit within the facility is 20MPH and should be for many good reasons. I saw multiple vehicles going at least 3x that speed. Be Endangering the small kids that are everywhere. There has always been a strict ban on alcohol on the beach. Still is and it is posted in multiple locations. Yesterday, multiple people were drinking and there were nip bottles and beer cans tossed on the beach. People were leaving beer cans in the ocean. Sad... NO DOGS ALLOWED ON BEACH is and always has been the rule, yet yesterday multiple people had dogs with them- marched right past the "absolutely no dogs allowed on beach!" signs I was on the beach for about 6 hours yesterday (labor day 2022) and never saw a single park employee. The beach was crowded and the camping area was quite full - but no signs of any park staff. Still a good CT beach, but the absence of staff and lack of rule enforcement is concerning.

I was not that impressed with this beach! I moved to CT about 1.5 years ago from MA. So far, I visited this beach twice - once in last summer and now in last week. Firstly, I felt the water is very dirty looking, not sure maybe it’s not a straight water from the sea (like backwaters). I didn’t see tides not that high as well! On the other hand, the shoreline is really long! I liked walking on the beach. I noticed there’re a lot of wood, logs 🪵 all the way. As I enquired a local, I got to know they’re pushed by the CT river with recent heavy rains/floods and the local government will remove them soon. I noticed there’s a lot of camping activity near this beach! Got to keep mosquito nets otherwise you’d be in huge trouble! Overall, my experience wasn’t that great, but I had no choice as not many beaches in CT. I liked the beaches in MA, RI, NH, VT and Maine!

Beautiful beach with ample parking. West Beach is the place to bring the family. There is a shaded eating area, the food was reasonably priced and was awesome. Burgers, chicken tenders, fried seafood combos, etc. vending machines for soda/water, snacks, and ice cream. Huge public bathrooms, with baby changing station. 4 shower sprayers for feet right outside the beach. The beach was clean, lots of space even during high tide. 4 life guard stands that were spread out. They had benches and shaded areas on the beach you could use as your spot as well. The water was clear and calm. Being the Long Island sound, no waves during low tide, high tide very little. Water was clean. Great place to bring the family. Parking was free if you have CT plates. There’s also much else to do outside West Beach, 2 other beaches, hiking, running paths, fishing, camping.

Open since 1919, this beautiful state park has two long miles of shoreline that allow it to be known as Connecticuts' largest public beach park. Hammonassett is pet friendly (during the off-season 30Sept - 01Apr), very clean, and has plenty of parking with multiple interesting places to stop. The beach itself is the longest stretch of public shoreline in Connecticut, which offers plenty of opportunities to view the beautiful scenery in peace. Within the state park is a nature center (Meigs Point) that offers detailed information on the locations history and wildlife. Affectionately called Hammo, this is a great place to relax alone or with family, take pictures, fish, swim, camp (550 camping spots), picnic, walk, and/or simply enjoy life.

Very quiet place , I went today and everything was very quiet, people were enjoying themselves without disturbing, a group had music but it was very low, everything was very pleasant, the only thing is the beach does not have any trees or booths to protect themselves from the sun and the water was a bit dirty. I removed 1 star because the beach is no crystal clear , the water temperature was very nice not cool .

I found it to be one of my favorite beaches in Connecticut. It is very large with plenty of parking, there are grills and picnic tables . With pavilions for shade . They do have two snack bars that are open during the day . Hammonasset has a very large campground,so it is very walkable to get to the water. Great place to watch the sun set
