Rainbow Falls — Attraction in Mammoth Lakes

This review is for Rainbow Falls via Devils Postpile Trail which was a 5 miles round trip that took 2.5 hour to complete.

This was a stunning hike with the columnar basalt formations near the beginning of the trail and ending at a raging waterfall! Trail was mostly a wide dirt path through the forest with minimal elevation changes. Furthermore, the trail ends with a steep steps to the bottom of the waterfall! Minimal mosquito presence.

Free to drive your vehicle to trailhead on Saturday before 7am. Or pay ticket prices for shuttle bus after 7:30am.

It is best to see the rainbow at noon when the sun is straight above. I would recommend going all the way down to see it. In the summer, it is hot and the mist is SUPER refreshing. A lot of people don't go down and stay at the top part to take pictures because they think it's too far down, but it's actually a short walk down and its totally worth it. Lovely spot, hike is mildly challenging with some short inclines. Walking stick helpful but not required. Children managed this hike. The falls are worth the walk. Devils Postpile can be added as it is on the same trail. The Falls are in a park so you will have to pay the park fee if the ranger station is open. Minaret Vista is a nice stop after the park.
