Read moreOur ski trip to 7 Springs was canceled due to lack of snow, but we had a non-refundable condo so we looked into other things to do that weekend. We found Coral Caverns, but realize they were closed until spring. We did see where they had opened up during the off season to accommodate groups. We called, Bill, the owner, and he said come on down! We showed up, there were 8 of us. Bill, his son and some helpers opened up the shop for us. He went through the history of the mine/cave, told us of the tectonic movement that brought the ancient coral reef from the coast of Virginia to the middle of PA. We toured the cavern for about an hour and a half, fascinating stuff. At $12/person it was a steal. Bring cash in the off season, they can't run a credit card. Bill had a vast knowledge of the cavern and the history of the area and the lime stone mine that revealed the caverns. At the end of the tour he realized I was a magnetic's engineer and let me tell you , he could give Bill Nye a run for his money! If you are in the area, stop and see this place it is amazing and the crew is fantastic. Down the road is Jean Bonnet's 1762 restaurant and going the other east is the Pike Glades Winery. Both worth visiting. All...
Read moreHidden gem. Trust me, read the whole review.
Location was a little odd. This cavern is not state or park run. It is on land owned by a family that lives right next to the cave entrance. We were a little thrown off because we expected well marked roads, but what we found was a home made sign, and a "pond" that was all clay colord water with a blow up swan in it. Random, I know!
A gentleman saw us driving aimlessly and he waved and pointed where we should go, or we might have turned around and gone back home.
Once parked, we walked into the "welcome building" which is a museum/shop/and cash register where you pay for tickets" that looked like it had been closed for 50 years. My Dad looked at me like maybe we should not do this... Glad I didnt act on his questioning of my sanity.
The guy who gave us the tour was the land owner. He has been doing these tours for YEARS! He could answer any question we had about the fossils, time period, history, etc. He had some neat stories about how the cave had been used for classical music recordings and movies.
The cave itself is really neat. I have never seen anything like it. Great hidden gem of a cave and tour. Would totally do it again when we have more company from...
