On May 22, 2019, a fire in Mexico jumped the Rio Grande and burned down the building and barracks that housed the La Harmonia Store and Visitor Center. The Big Bend Conservancy has established a Castolon Recovery Fund and plans are underway to design a new place. In the meantime there is a small temporary building that houses a convenience store with some souvenirs. I was able to get my Passport cancellation stamp for Castolon at the store's register.

Castolon is a mixture of natural and human history displayed in the stark beauty of rock, cactus, adobe and ruins. This is one of the most remote visitors centers I've ever seen. Gazing at the Chihuahuan cliffs over the Rio Grande was quite touching as Chihuahua was the birth place of my grandfather. I wish that NPS had the funding to repair the burned- out barracks and latrines. Qué lastima!

Visited in February 2018 as a family with a 12yo. It's the only place in this desert part of Big Bend NP where you can buy some food and drinks for lunch. Also, you can ask questions about the trails here. We had a pit stop here after spending the morning hiking the Santa Helena Canyon Trail and before the Mules Ears Overlook trail in the afternoon.

The Castolon Visitor Center at Big Bend National Park is a unique stop, but it comes with some challenges. Located near the historic district, this spot often feels crowded and bustling with activity. Parking can be tricky since there’s no clearly defined lot, and the dusty conditions can make navigating the area a bit chaotic.

Currently under construction, the visitor center feels especially busy as workers and visitors share the space. However, the availability of flushable toilets seems to be a big draw, making it a convenient stop despite the congestion. After all, amenities like this are a rarity in such a remote park!

While the construction and crowds can detract from the experience, the location’s historical significance and proximity to scenic spots still make it worth a visit. If you plan to stop here, patience is key—arrive early or be prepared to wait for parking. Once renovations are complete, this site will likely be more functional and enjoyable.

For now (as of 11/25/24), Castolon is best approached as a quick rest stop rather than a leisurely visit. The facilities and historical charm have potential, but the current state might leave you wishing for a bit...

This visitor center is attached to the Castolon Store and is filled with educational information regarding the parks Flora and fauna, as well as the history of Castolon. On site is also a picnic area and convenient store which sells souvenirs, snacks, drinks, alcohol, games, ice, ice cream, books among many other things. In a separate building are flush restrooms. On site are Castolon period buildings you can go into, one has a museum inside. This all overlooks the magnificent Santa...
