Droop Mountain is not only amazing with the views of the mountains and natural surroundings, but the history of Droop Mountain Battlefield. Every year they still hold a reenactment of the battle, where u can witness the battle that took place and how the soldiers lived first hand. U also have the lookout tower, which gives u a view of Hillsboro and all the farm land around it, as well as the mountains and sky. At the lookout tower, there is also a playground with swings, a slide, a seesaw, etc., There is bathrooms, and picnic areas with small outdoor grills, and plenty of woods and paths to roam. Then there is also another area within the park with a playground, a concert stage, a bug gazebo for large events, etc. There is different paths u can explore such as: Horse Heaven, which is down below the road with a small boardwalk, showing big rocks and boulders with valleys in between that go into a cave.. Horse Heaven is where the soldiers laid their horses to rest when they were killed in the battle. U also have the area where the Battlefield rook place with a canon statue, a cemetery for the fallen soldiers, and this is where the Ranger Station is. U are just a few miles from Beartown Park, which is a beautiful place with boardwalks all around and thru the park, with lookouts and information about the things around u. The boardwalk circles around the area, with areas that break off of the main course, where u can see different things such as rock formations, caves, trees, moss, plants, etc. Beartown is a great place for a family outting, or a family reunion and under supervision is even safe for small children. The area also has bathrooms and a gazebo where u can stop and have some lunch on ur way in or out! Beautiful natural wonders that are great for...
Read moreThe view from the Observation Tower on a clear day is incredible. An easy climb to the top, there are no signs once you’re there to tell you what you are looking at (some direction or map would have been nice, especially for those not from WV). Other than the view, and a small picnic area, there’s not much here.
From the main highway you’ll head towards the visitors center (you’ll see the cannon) and from there veer right and downhill down a very narrow single-lane width road heading towards the Observation Tower.
Along those roads were signs depicting the main events of the Droop Mountain Battle. Unless there is someone behind you, slow to read it or take a picture to read it later.
If time allows head over to the Pearl S. Buck historical home and museum in Hillsboro about 10 minutes away. It’s incredible and well worth the detour! It’s a guided tour, so allow some time to get through all three floors of this small but historically...
Read moreThis is a great place. Droop Mountain Battlefield Park is full of history and some amazing views. The park is very well maintained and very clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful with us, as it was our first time visiting. The log cabin museum is really great and full of historical information about the Battle of Droop Mountain. The path to the scenic overlook is well maintained and easily accessible and the views are amazing. The tree behind the fuel house at the beginning of the path to the overlook is very interesting. The cannon and markers are very informative. The restroom facility is a little rustic, but was expected as you are out in the middle of nowhere and on top of a mountain lol. However they were clean and hand sanitizer was available. I really enjoyed it, along with my teenagers that were with me. Definitely recommend this Park to anyone looking for a nice historic place of West...
