This isn't a terrible beach, but it it's definitely not worth visiting unless you live in the town it's located in. It has nice features, like a snack shack, nice views of the Atlantic coast, and the water is great for swimming up and down the beach. Dogs are welcome and people let the run off the leash later in the day. Unfortunately for Rexame Beach, there are more things to be annoyed about than to enjoy.
The parking is $5-20 depending on the time of day and day of the week, and you'll need to request a pass and post it on your vehicle. Parking is limited to one lot. There is no bath house or any type of running water to rinse off with. The town provides one porta-potty for the entire beach, only one. Then at about 5pm someone chains the porta-potty shut. They chain it shut, with an actual chain and padlock. The snack shack also closes at the same time.
The sand on the beach isn't as coarse as kitty litter, but I imagine that it's close enough and your cat wouldn't mind if you brought some home for it. But, when compared to the untold number of rocks and stones littering the beach, the sand looks small. Definitely not the best sand for a sand castle, even though you could probably build an actual castle with all the rocks.
The water is typical temperature for the area, but the water clarity is maybe one foot at a six foot depth.. so leave your snorkel at home because you wont be able to see anything. And even if you could see you'd only be looking at the same terrible sand and rocks that are all over the beach. There weren't even any seashells.
The horse flies run rampant on the beach. So pack your bug spray with your sun screen. And keep a close eye on children in the water, there is a steep drop and a bit of...
Read moreAfter an hour drive to this beach, we discovered that they'd closed the lot to the public and would only allow Resident parking. Frustrating, but fine. What made matters worse was that they were handing out paper slips with directions to an "alternative beach:" Brant Rock. This "beach" was a joke. There is virtually no real beach space as the water is almost up to the jetty wall, and even worse, there were so many rocks, you could not even swim without lake shoes. This seems to be the theme at South Shore beaches open to the public - too many rocks. My friend cut her toe on one. And to add even to this, I cannot explain the smell of sulfur that began to overwhelm us about 10 minutes into sunbathing. I am certain it came from the water. At one point we watched a hungover woman throwing up because the smell had overwhelmed her too. Really a horrible waste of a beach day.
Rexhame seemed from the pictures to be not as rocky, but I'll never be able to say because I'll never again make the trip to this beach. It's not worth the risk with Cape beaches another 10 or so minutes away. Just keep going. It's obvious Marshfield does not want...
Read moreI’m sure it would’ve been good if we could get in, but non-residents CANNOT use Marshfield beaches on weekends. We were really surprised when we got there since the website advertises “ample parking for residents and non-residents”. They either limit non residents to a very low number or don’t offer it at all it wasn’t clear. Tried rexhame and the kid working was really unhelpful for offering alternatives or an explanation so we tried to speak to the manager and he wouldn’t let us. Then tried a beach down the road where the kid was really friendly, told us non-residents won’t get weekend parking and to try the Plymouth beaches. Also hinted that the parking management in town is not great. If the town wants to limit weekend usage to its residents fine, but they need to be way more...
