My friend had a bad experience today at this Iskcon of DC temple. Not sure how to describe but I will try my best to explain. I accompanied my friend to this temple and also saw everything that happened today. My friend and his family are regular visitors and devotees of this temple, however today when his two year old daughter was holding the chanting beads in her hand and later placed it on the floor, to which at this visual my friend immediately stood up and asked his daughter to stop doing it (even his family member were constantly telling the child to not touch the chanting bead at all and explain her that it is for adult use only, concerning that the child might not know completely how to use it) and brought it back to the bead collector basket. Meanwhile one of the temple’s learned scholar or priest who was also watching all this started scolding my friend that, you cannot sit and observe your kids improper behavior. Basically the learned scholar was telling my friend how bad as a parent he was that he let his child do anything which was not true at all. My friend felt bad and apologized for his daughter’s behavior and told him that they are constantly looking after the kid along with his family and not allowing any such thing to happen from their end. My friend accepted that his child placing something as auspicious as chanting beads should not touch the ground, and therefore immediately he stood up and corrected his kids behavior, however the learned scholar/priest not sure did not understood the meaning of how such things should be communicated to a parent and scolded my friend badly. I am not sure but such kind of behavior from a religious place as a temple discourages regular devotees to visit. My friend felt bad for what happened. I saw everything and consoled my friend. My friend’s wife wanted to talk with the scholar person but by the time she completed her rituals, the person left or was not available. If the chanting beads are so auspicious and if learned scholar at this temple location is so concerned they should place it at only adults reach or place a sign outside the temple that kids below certain age are not allowed inside the temple. I feel bad and wanted to write this review to ensure that it is not about right or wrong, it is about the situation. It is difficult to tell a kid especially 2 y old what is right or wrong, parents can try their best to explain their kid and be on them 24/7 to correct them even then kids are pure souls they might commit a mistake, but that doesn’t mean the learned scholar have the authority to scold a devotee and discourage them especially those who are regular visiting the temple. I am not sure if Prabhupad’s initiative meant to demotivate a devotee due to their kid’s mistake. I felt sorry for that learned scholar to feel and under the impression that he has gained learnings from the mission so he can discourage and have the right to scold a common man/a dedicated devotee, it felt that because they have so much knowledge they feel that common man doesn’t know anything about Krishna or the temple. Really appreciate if proper guidance and SOPs on what a regular devotee family with small kids should do is provided before entering the...
