Lovely stop. Picnic tables round the cabin along with a quick trail off to the side. Probably not worth a whole trip to get to but totally worth a stop. The parking lot can fit about 8 cars. There is a porta potty (bathroom) here as well. The trail is not challenging at all. There are tours occasionally as well on the weekends. Pleasant to sit for a bit.

Had a great time here with the kiddos. They have very cool “living history” VR feature where you can scan a qr code with your phone and learn about the cabin, the people who lived and worked there and the community. There are also picnic tables and hiking trails so you can bring lunch amc make whole afternoon of it.

The Oakley Cabin in Olney is a delightful getaway that seamlessly blends historical charm with modern comfort. Nestled in a serene, wooded area, this cabin offers a truly unique experience that transports you back in time while still ensuring a comfortable stay.

Small in size & operating hours, but big in perspective. Walk around the grounds. After exploring what we could of the house, my kids enjoyed exploring the nearby creek. This small site is notched out of Reddy Branch Stream Valley Park, which is fairly large. (“SVPs” are a Montgomery County euphemism for unmaintained, unadvertised publicly owned buffer zones.). There are some paths in the SVP roughly paralleling Brookeville Rd. Try identifying a spring near the property that feeds Reddy Branch. (Hints: 1: it’s on the other side of the creek from the house! 2: you have to get on a path & be away from the mown lawn. 3: less than 50 yards...

Small, 10-15 minute stop unless 1) you come during open-cabin hours, or 2) you want to use the picnic tables on the neatly-mowed lawn. The informational plaques are well done and the cabin itself is well-maintained, giving a quick glimpse into the difficult history of African-Americans in the area. FYI - there were a lot of...
