We love this trail! We park free on Maple Ave and walk towards Sligo Creek Parkway and turn left onto the street. There is both a dirt trail along a creek or you can walk / bike on the actual street. There is a yellow gate at the Maple Ave entrance to close off the street from cars on Saturdays and Sundays. My daughter scooters on the street without worrying about stop signs or cars, so it’s so much more fun and safe. We walked all the way down to the end of the trail and walk back to Maple Ave, and I got about 5000 steps in. It’s a perfect length to walk about 45-60 minutes depending on how fast your pace is. There is a tiny creek along the trail so it sounds very peaceful. For families wi try kids, there is a public playground along the trail. It’s so packed on the weekends though. My daughter didn’t want to play there since there were too many kids. There were people of all ages biking, walking, and jogging.

This trail is nice. The entire trail is paved, but (I presume just on the weekend) there are portions where there is road blocked off providing bigger spaces for mixed user types (I.e., walkers, runners, bikers) It’s heavily wooded and runs along the creek, which is pretty. I biked it because I wasn’t so familiar with the roads. Some areas got pretty narrow, but overall it was fine. The trail can get a little bumpy but there are also parts that are newly paved and other parts with fresh lining and a smooth terrain. There are many parks and fields outfitted along the route as well. Parking is ample at different points along the route as well. Even saw some Tiger swallowtail butterflies!

Always enjoy this trail. Hiking, biking, picnicking whatever from the Eastern Branch and the Anacostia River Trail to Wheaton Park and Brookside Gardens this extremely well maintained trail has it all. Along the way is a grocery store in Kemp Mill. Also a golf course, hospital, and a numerous playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts line the trail.

I started at the trail head in Kirkwood and the trail was well marked. Initially, it was easy to follow but as it started to intersect with other trails, it became confusing. Twice I had to ask if I was still on the trail. According to my information source, the trail was about 10 miles long, but it's really about 8. I did a round trip and coming back, the signage was even less evident. Once, a wrong turn landed me in a playground. There are multiple major road crossings and the trail doesn't always line up on both sides of the road, requiring riding along the sidewalk to find the next section. I was on a bicycle and the trail could benefit from wider curb cuts. It's also very bumpy in parts from tree roots, not a problem if you're on foot, but very jarring on wheels. The setting is beautiful and the trail winds mostly...
